QuicknightParticipant
Had a nice listen there…but for some reason the track is what I call a little too “boxy”. Could use some more texture, don’t you think?
QuicknightParticipantThank you, Glad you like it! 🙂
QuicknightParticipantWell, this was a nice read for me. Certainly picked up a few good tips from here 🙂
QuicknightParticipantGlad you like it! It’s up for a free download now 🙂
QuicknightParticipantMaybe you’re right, but I’m having a problem with the “learning” part. I just don’t seem to make progress. All my mixes sound really generic and dull. And I’m sitting here, in front of my laptop, with absolutely no clue on what to do next 🙁
QuicknightParticipantYeah, if the artist themselves offer a free download, it should be a 320kbps mp3. Otherwise, you are trying to rip tracks off there by using a converter, or someone has uploaded a poor quality version of the track for a free (and illegal) download.
As for where you can get free, high quality music..check out your favourite artists’ website and social media. It’s quite likely that they’d released a couple of tracks for free which you may be able to download.
QuicknightParticipantI’ve already made the acapella using the original track and the instrumental version, using phaze-inversion but I was more concerned about the legal issues.
I guess, I’ll finish the remix first, get some feedback and see if it is any good, and then get in touch with the artists (Or try to, anyway).
QuicknightParticipantSo three possible scenarios. First: I get the green light, Second: I don’t get a response and Third: I get a flat NO.
Okay, I’ll take my chances and ask them for the acapella. But how? FB? Twitter? Email? And what should I write to them?
QuicknightParticipantActually you’re wrong there, DJ Spars. The music industry is far more developed in India than you think. India hosts the worlds 4th largest EDM festival Sunburn, Artists are literally begging to play in India …Not to mention some of the great DJs/producers who have established a career starting from there.
I say you’re just not looking hard enough in the industry. Well, you’ll be surprised to learn that there are courses which offer a degree in music. Checkout Beatfactory Academy, Academy of Sound: Mumbai and of course, Point Blank School of Music which is available internationally online. There is absolutely no excuse for you.
I do agree about the club managers avoiding the cost of DJs though, that does make it harder to get gigs. But frankly, once you’ve built a solid fan base, that will change the scenario.
Take my advice and relax. Don’t loose your confidence. You’re in 11th grade, right? There’s plenty of time for you to explore and learn about the stuff that will take you closer to your goals.
QuicknightParticipantA tip if you don’t have gain controls: Keep your channel faders at about 3/4th of the way only…that way if a track ts too quiet, you’ll be able to compensate for it.
QuicknightParticipantYes that’s right. If you don’t have a gain control on your controller, no amount of external audio equipment will help. You will just add another volume control to your setup.
Just as a sidenote: If your bass guitar is active, you can plug it in to the mic input of your controller. Only problem in the Numark is that the mic input cuts everything below 500Hz..so your bass won’t be effective. I use a keyboard with it and it works fine.

But it’s quite expensive. If you haven’t decided a DAW yet, try REAPER. It’s a fantastic one that I learnt production on.
Oh and my name is Quicknight…. Not DJ Quicknight. 🙂

QuicknightParticipantMicrosoft Word. It’s the best software for mashups. :p
Okay now serious…for electronic music.. Ableton Live is the way to go. Mixed in Key also has a software that apparently makes making mashups easier.

For gigs, usually the managers are able to pay for renting a pair of Pioneer CDJs or an SX/SZ.
