I use mixtrack pro II and think it is awesome.  I would not get the original though as it was not designed for the software most people use with it AFAIK and therefore worth getting the Pro II if you can afford the extra £$£$£$

I have been looking at the KRK sub woofer – it is about £330, but I only want it to go with my KRK monitors.  I heard it can fill a big room…… I don;t really need it for my studio, but just love getting them gadgets!!

I don;t know if it is compatible with your gear.  What is your price range?

I use a mixtrack pro II.  It is newish and called “entry level” though I can do everything I want with it.  Perfect for all you said above and I think maybe as it is not top range it is simpler to learn your way around.

It is great value and means I think you need your own gear if you want to practice whenever the mood takes you (the only time IMHO as you need to be in the mood to be creative)

    do you mean like lag?

I had an issue when I tried to use Audacity to record my mixes when I had DJ Intro by Serato (it doesn’t allow you to record directly).  It cased Lag somewhere in my computer, probably due to the sound card not being top notch and it made mixing impossible.  The head phones told me the beat was lined up, but then when mixed there was lag from the controller to the computer (or laptop) and it was out.

maybe your controller nudge is too sensitive?  I have got used to mine now and it isn’t sensitive, so I give it a good nudge and it just moves the tune very, very fractionally, which is ideal.  i doubt they are all the same.

Sounds to me like (haven’t listened yet but will when I get home) that you are describing songs that are at same BPM but not perfectly “lined up”.  This is a skill that sync bitton does not fix, it is about having a an ear and practice and experience.  You will have to nudge one tune so it gets in perfect time with the other.

At first it isn’t always obvious which one to do that to, this comes with time and practice.

My tip is to line songs up listening only to the incoming track on headphones and current track with open ear.  Then when you think they are lined up perfectly you then cover ears with both headphone ear pieces and play BOTH tracks through the headphones.  You then know if you need a minor adjustment before mixing it in.

This only works if you mix in what I call the “old way”.  If you are SYNCing and then stopping the incoming track and pressing play at a certain point already cross fadered – this will not work.  I never do that though.

Thanks for the reply.  I do use Serato and the SYNC function seems to do all that without the need for beatgrids.  I have the odd track that Serato doesn’t register the BPM, but simply typing it in manually seems to sort that immediately.

I guess I just don’t need to use it much for want to do.

    good posting 🙂

Not so much practice…but kind of linked.  If I am going to build a set, or especially a mix cd/tape/mp3 – I think it is important to record it and then listen back in an entirely different situation and on a different sound system…I usually do it in my car.

This gives me an entirely different perspective on the sounds “as a whole”.  I find when I am mixing I am listening as a dj….and sometimes listening back I will realize I play a song for too long and should mix out earlier…that kind of thing.

Also, listening on different speakers/system can make a very interesting difference too.

Hi there Ben.  I have not listened to the whole mix yet (I will do, but the kids need tending this AM!!), but have listened to over half of it.

However, I don’t need to hear the whole mix to know that you understand the things you need to do.  You will be just fine dude!     It has a good balanced feel.  There are a couple of mixes I would have done differently…if I recall there is a mix at about 22 minutes I would have done differently myself and beatmixed a little later when the house beat kicked in, as it sounded like an energy drop and didn’t flow as well as the rest, but overall it sounds very good.   But DJs all have different styles, so that is not criticism, just my view. Also at about 39 – seemed like an abrupt transition, but I really don’t know these tracks, most of the mixing is pretty seamless and you haven’t tried to do loads of flash stuff which is good too.

Suggest if you have friends already DJing that is most certainly the easiest route in.  Just nag them, harass them and get a set on their show!  And if that doesn’t work ….nag them some more!!

I am going to drop you a soundcloud follow and keep tabs on you.  Good luck 🙂
