This looks identical to the Chauvet Swarm5FX of which I have two. It gives a pretty good effect (albeit a bit overwhelming in some circumstances). With two of them I use the master/slave function by connecting them with a DMX cable.

All in all I think it’s a good light, but I wouldn’t necessarily say buy this instead of a moving head.

Oh and to answer your question the experience of using a Native Instruments controller on Traktor is going to be 1000x better.

Which SCS are you talking about? Personally, I can’t recommend anything by Stanton right now. All the SCS products are gone and forgotten by the company. Apparently they’re working on new stuff but I wouldn’t hold my breath.

I have 4 Stanton SCS.1D decks and a SCS.1M collecting dust in the basement.

I own an Antari Z350 “fazer” (it’s uses fog juice but provides a lasting, haze like effect by combining a slow steady stream of fog with a fan to distribute it). The key here is it needs a long-lasting fog liquid like Antari’s own FLG fluid (I use Martin Jem iFog).

The effect isn’t as subtle as a hazer, but it allows you to create atmosphere and improve your lighting effects without blasting smoke in someone’s face like a smoke machine would do. And it only cost me $350 Cdn, as opposed to $1000+ for a hazer.

I agree with Chuck. I went to a wedding (as a guest) where the only lighting was a Gig Bar and the dancefloor never had more than a dozen people on it (it was a very small wedding) and at that I found the lighting was very underwhelming.

But we all have to start somewhere I guess.

The general consensus among pros is to avoid Behringer products altogether.

If you’re looking for an affordable PA setup I would have a look at Mackie or EV’s ZLX series.

    900s 🙂

I picked them up for a song. As a predominantly mobile guy, I like the idea of being able to play off USB in a pinch. Also wedding couples occasionally surprise me with a request to play a song off CD.

These are a little bigger than the 400/500 but I like that they have native Traktor support.

Check to see if your computer has a setting to shut off the hard drive after a certain amount of time (usually in energy saver settings). Sounds to me like this could be the case. If so, set it to ‘never’.

I sometimes find it creepy to look at the crowd. Especially so when I’m not in an elevated position and there’s people 3-4 feet away staring right back at me. Best solution for me is to stare at the laptop screen and try to look busy 🙂

I don’t agree with the statement that the controller will be “a little bit more responsive” in Serato. From my experience, the VDJ mappings for natively supported controllers are extremely tight. I have yet to find anything that’s less responsive with that software.

Having said that, if you feel like Serato fits your needs then you won’t be at all disappointed with your software choice.

I’m a bit late to this but wanted to add about the IR port that you wouldn’t miss it because the last few versions of OSX don’t support it anymore.

    Good choice by the way.

My only caution to this would be that flash drives are susceptible to corruption by static shock so you would be wise to have a backup drive.
