I’m with the guys who think this gig is one to pass over. In fact, it sounds like a complete nightmare. I did a volunteer 30th birthday party for a friend of a friend once. It sucked because nobody told me that the birthday girl along with nearly all of her friends and family were born again Christians. Worst dj experience of my life. Don’t do anything for free, it’s not worth the trouble.

I love my 2012 MBP. I upgraded ram and added an ssd from owc. Their upgrade packages are stupid easy. I don’t much care about either retina or large screens which helped keep the price low. I went with the MBP over the air because you can’t upgrade the ram in an air. Sometimes I wish I would have just grabbed an air with 4 gigs of ram but at the time I thought both the hd and the ram were non-upgradable.

All of the advice these guys have given you is probably all you need but I’ll add a few thoughts.

If you’ve been asked to come back then you did a good job. There are a lot of things that can lead to thin crowds (time slot, weather, time of the month, news stories, seasons, etc.) don’t get too worried about it.

Secondly, I wouldn’t worry about mixing in key unless it’s an unwritten law of your genre that I’m unaware of (like trance for instance?). Key seems especially unimportant in front of live crowds and room dynamics and harmonics and mono systems, who knows what key the stuff is actually heard by the crowd in anyway? I completely ignore key during gigs.

Read the crowd but don’t over do that either because there are morons in every crowd that think they’re DJs and their requests/demands are usually wack. Probably the most important thing I can add is to take all the opportunities you can to play out because that’s where you really gain the experience you need to rock a crowd.

Wait until you start having tech issues. I’ll post a link to a recent gig where my mixer (Xone:23C) abruptly cut out no less than 3 times during the night. I rolled with it, the crowd still danced and I had a backup plan in the form of my iPhone hooked up to the house mixer with a crowd-pleaser ready to go. https://hearthis.at/alt./altrock-akron-square-2-19-2016/

I would say to look right at the Denon MC4000. I really love mine. But this is a funny post time-wise because I just decided to sell mine so I can focus on my DVS setup. Because I use a Xone:23C, I can still mix with just that combined with my laptop in external mode using the keyboard for hotcues and play/stop for mobile gigs. It’s a compromise but because that one mixer can handle analog and software mixing and can be used at home and at a gig, I can’t justify keeping the Denon controller because I’m looking at a cross country move and need to downsize, even though it’s awesome.

One thing that’s cool is that it’s easy to get old school phasing sounds once you clone the deck.

I ended up grabbing the Audio 2 as soon as the lightning version came out. Had to spring for the Traktor power supply but now I’m totally satisfied. Best $150 I’ve spent in awhile.

That is so right!! Audacity is all you need to fix a mixtape. If you’re actually mixing in software with no physical inputs . . . I don’t have the words for how wack that is. Well, I do but I don’t want the admins to smack me down.

Here’s how I do it. It only works if you haven’t changed the pitch/tempo on the tracks. If you blow a transition, back up and start again. Do it as many times as necessary and then just cut to the last transition you try in audacity. The key is zooming deep into the wav file in audacity so when you make your cut, it won’t leave an audible click. It takes some practice to get right but once you develop some muscle memory, it’s really easy. I only fix egregious mistakes when I make a mixtape so maybe 2 edits per hour. I record my mixtapes within the software (VDJ8) to a wav file to avoid any extra transcoding. If you changed the tempo of one or more of the tracks in the mix, you better make note of when and what speed. It’s easier to rerecord than trying to recreate your exact movements on the pitch fader.

I absolutely feel that way on both accounts. I watch a lot of sets on YouTube to get hyped but my problem with going out is that most of the time the djs suck. That said, when I catch a dope set, I’ll start following the dj on twitter so I can go to more of his or her sets. The euphoria thing is real but try to remember that most punters could care less so the only people who are going to react positively to that disclosure are other djs as even most performers will roll their eyes at the notion of hitting play on other peoples’ songs.

I used flac as my lossless codec for a few years and was happy. I DJ with virtual DJ and, ironically, found that it would insert a loud digital clipping noise at the end of random wav files but had no problem with flac’s. I have roughly 9,000 songs in my DJ crate and half of them are lossless while another 30% are 360 Kbps or so mp3’s. Still, my total crate size is only 180 gigs. In 2015 hard-drive $, that’s nothing so please keep your lossless files lossless.

On a whim last year I switched my DJ setup from Windows to a MBP so I batch-converted my flac files to alac. That worked great. Everything sounds the same and now they keep artwork in tags like mp3’s. As an added benefit, I can also use the alac files with my iOS devices. I love flac and will always use it as my archive format of choice but alac is More useful for DJing, especially if you use a Mac.

WeGO3 is all you need and it sounds amazing. If you want to spend some real money, step up to the Reloop Beatpad. I wish I had one but it’s super duper expensive.

I’d have him stick to school functions and house parties so he can keep working on his craft. There’s plenty of time to be in clubs in his future. Enjoy being a kid while you can.

#6 Bro, for real. That’s embarrassing. I’m a red-blooded man who enjoys a pretty woman as much as the next but I was raised to be a feminist who celebrates diversity and my answer is no you don’t need half naked women to sell anything.

Ok, I’m not typing on a cell phone so that should limit the odd spell correction choices.

The z1 looks dope and if I was looking to use it with a laptop for a compact setup, I’d be tempted. Also, it would be pretty good for DJ Player if it worked, but it dosent because of Native Instruments. That makes the z1 a dead end here.

It’s just as well because when I DJ with an iOS device, I prefer to use the on-screen controls. The problem here is that I can’t find an iOS soundcard that seems fit for this task. The focusrite stuff looks the closest but they drop the ball en the end by not connecting to iOS devices without a connection kit.
