For sure, and the SR and SX and even possibly the XDL-R1 could get a lot of the mobile and home DJ market.  I see the SZ as like what I would print a pic of and tape to my DJ practice console or wall, just like I would with a DJM CDJ Nexus setup pic… IF I wanted that…LOL   the SZ I could go for, Z2 and TTs, good small format CDJs with hot cues and slip, etc. and a mixer, like the Z2 but Pioneer 2+2 Serato mixer, those I could see, but the Club Level/Style 900Nexus and 2000Nexux setups and similar, with their size, price, features, etc…. I don’t think I would buy it if I won a lotto…. Lots of PA to run my whatever into, and truss and lights, enough for a full on concert… yeah, not a DJM/CDJ setup…. although I might be picking up a pair of CDJ800Mk2, for so cheap it’s basically free, literally, the homie offered to give them to the cause (example of DJ community)…  I’ll be making a thread soon with my DDJ-SR vs ??? help question…. thanks to all on DDJT, hope you don’t mind the books…..errrr….. posts…                    Moonshadow

I’m tossing up the setup I envision…..   a CD player, possibly 2 , two AT-1240LP or Reloop TTs,  into the Z2, with a Maschine Mikro mapped for extra buttons….(have it on it’s way any day now, gonna start into production), into the Z2 I will have my DDJ-SR or Reloop TM8…. best of all worlds….   I will likely use the Serato controller and laptop for mobile gigs, unless the client/bride wants vinyl for looks….  versatility , ability to learn to use any gear basically, fun, ect…   I would have no problem with one crate of selected records for the night, and my laptop, a Z2 and 2 TTs or CD players.   As long as there is space, if not, well, I guess I’ll sort that one out, use what’s there, etc…

Gavin, I wasn’t at all meaning to run out and buy an SZ…. that thing is going to be an aspirational piece to a bunch of us…..   I am actually really torn right now between the DDJ-SR and the new Reloop TM8…..  the more I look into the Reloop the more I’m thinking I should make myself wait for it.   I didn’t get the impression from your first post that you were looking to buy the SZ, just that you had gotten to try it out…

Terry, I can totally see where he’s coming from…. I am a serato user at the moment, and am looking to upgrade to a DDJ-SR soon.  I also collect vinyl, and hope to eventually have a Z2 and turntables, and run my SR into that… I will use the SR for mobile gigs and the TTs will mostly stay at home unless a client/bride wants the vinyl TTs for looks…. some people just want to use records still too….  the Z2 from my understanding, will play regular vinyl just fine, and let you go from record in your collection to files on your laptop pretty seamlessly…   giving you the opportunity to use some real vinyl, and also have your whole HDD full of music at your disposal…  I can totally see what the OP is getting at I think.   I have actually toyed around with not even getting the SR and going to Traktor, but I’d have just the Z2 and probably a Maschine Mikro to map to it, I do have some cheap Numark TTs for using now, but I’m loving Serato and really want both, so I think I’m sticking to a controller for now…   Funny, just recently my friend posted on FB about CDs, and them being a dead format… 30 years from now people are probably still going to collect vinyl, and CDs, and want to use them for listening, DJing, etc….   just my $.02 as a NOOB, hope my ramblings were more a help than a hindrance.

Man the SZ is pretty cool, I don’t even really want a DJM and CDJs any more…LOL  Hopefully my SR,(think I’m pretty much settled on that one) will earn me enough to get one some day…LOL    It is a little large, but if you need small you can always have something small for those occasions too, probably what you had before the SZ would work, if not, and you can afford the SZ, you can afford an MC2000 or small modular NI stuff to have as well…

Yeah, after play #1 we had Manning off his game, and he never really recovered,   the Seahawks whole team played a hell of a game, the pics, the kick run back for TD, etc…. our D and special team out scored the ponies…LOL   They just didn’t pony up at all….  Wilson was poised and played a great game, receivers made some great catches, the whole offense did really well.   In reply to the above post, my old man had a front row seat I’m sure….   🙂

The 4Wheeler is a 2007 Kawasaki Prairie 360, white… I hope to be able to post a pic soon with the kiddos sitting on it and the plow hooked up, but have no pics right now…  it’s not fancy nor super fast, but it does what I need at the right price……

    Terry,

Right now I am using some cheap phones from the record shop, JVC I think….   they don’t isolate well, and I know even cheap “DJ” headphones will be much better…. However, these headphones are quite loud even on my iPod, and can get WAY TOO LOUD hooked into my Stanton analog mixer…. I have also tried a couple other sets of phones on the MTP2 and it’s just not loud at all….  I have a workaround for now, until my new controller arrives I will be running the MTP2 into the right side of my mixer, and the cue output into the left side of the mixer, I can then use the mixer to “amplify” it and use the mixer cue out to plug my phones into… I have the appropriate cabling and will be giving it a go at a house party Sat…..   I can make do for now….

Look for my “gear list” thread in the forum soon…. I hope to be ordering by next Friday…. just a couple more little hoops to navigate…LOL

Thanks again to all on DDJT, sorry to jack the thread, I’ll continue this in a new one… Terry, just wait and reply in the new thread….    Hope the OP is able to get a new controller soon, and one that works out well for them….

    Later folks,

I have no input on the SB or the Gemini model you listed… I offer my $.02…   I started about 9 months ago, I ordered a Gemini CNTRL-7 as it had XLR outs, and a lot of what I was after, at a great price.   I got the first one and it was defective, sent back to AMS and they sent another, it too was defective, in a different way.   I sent it back to AMS and paid a little more and got a Mixtrack Pro 2.   Now, after just a short time, I am doing some gigs and looking to upgrade from the Numark Mixtrack Pro 2,  it just isn’t up to doing gigs, mainly the volume of the output and especially the cue output…. cue is just so low it’s unusable in a LOUD bar/club…   Also, I have yet to find a hard case made for the MTP2.    I am looking at Denon and Pioneer, and am almost settled on the DDJ-SR for my upgrade.   I give you this just to get you thinking about build quality.   I would possibly save a little more and get something built well,  from a top company, that you will be able to use for years to come.   Spending twice has me a little chapped… don’t get me wrong, I love the MTP2, it has been a great learning tool and I will continue to use it for some of my practice and for smaller gigs and house parties, but I’m looking to get something more “pro” for larger gigs.   Of the two you listed I’d get the Pioneer, but I would consider the cost of the upgrade to the full version of the software in my decision if I were you.   I am leaning to the SR, it comes with the full Serato DJ software, and the others I was considering didn’t.   Add the cost of the upgrade to the cost of the controller and I was almost at the price of the SR, one I think ended up being more expensive.   I would suggest you keep saving for another month or two, eat lots of Mac & Cheese and Ramen …LOL… and possibly spend some more time researching and “soul searching” to decide what you really want out of this purchase.   For example, if I had gotten the MC2000 I would still be fine with it most likely, sure the MTP2 and SB have the pads, but they are layered and not used the same as the “performance pads” on say a DDJ-SX…   Wishing you the best, let us know what you end up with and how it works out for you.

I know it’s a month later, but thought I’d chime in… For one, I’m wondering what the OP chose to do/get, and how it’s working out.      I am a user of the Mixtrack Pro 2, and I love it, as a learning tool….  I would not however suggest that anyone looking to go beyond their own home for practice, or doing house parties, looks at getting the MTP2….   I have done a couple gigs with it that worked out great.   On Dec. 28th I had a gig at a local bar, and with the sound system cranked up loud for the last half of the party, I could not hear the cue output of the MTP2 over the PA….   I know that better phones would help that, but these phones are more than loud enough on an analog mixer.   I also run my MTP2 through an analog mixer, as the main output is low and my amp then has to work quite a bit harder …. with the analog mixer I can up the gain and master volume to get what I want going into the amp…. next gig I will be running the Cue out of the MTP2 through the mixer to “amplify” the cue …. kind of weird to see it set up that way, but in initial testing, it’s workable and would let me actually hear what I’m trying to get ready and beat matched.  Just my $.02, as a noob …. take it for what it is, something you read online…..LOL   Just wondering when I see it being recommended, why folks are recommending the MTP2 to people who mention gigs and such?   I’ll be following to see what follows, hope for an update from the OP…

Thanks for the input folks, my main issue is with my Mixtrack Pro 2, when the PA is loud, the cue volume on full is just not near loud enough….  not nearly as loud as the cue on my analog mixer….   also, the master out isn’t that loud either… so I usually run it into the analog mixer, then adjust gain to get near 0 dB….   otherwise I have to work my amp much harder running just the MTP2 into the amp….   I’ll be starting a thread soon, so I’ll stop cluttering this thread up with my ramblings…. but thanks to all for input, and I’ll be following this one still to see what the OP ended up deciding on…

As a mixtrack pro 2 user, be sure and have good headphones, ones that get loud on your MTP2 and that also isolate the outside audio well.   At my last gig, the cue output on the MTP2 was not near loud enough for the second half of the night when I was giving all my Sansui 6060 had to give…. LOL  A club with a decent PA would have been even worse I think.   Granted, I have cheap headphones, and am going to remedy that shortly,  but the headphones I have are plenty loud on an analog mixer…..   Just something to consider, as during the best/loudest part of the night, there were times when cueing was almost imposible, and I had to just try to get it close, drop it on the one and judge it fwd/back a little as I quickly faded to the new song…. not horrible, but also not as good as it could be…. I have not yet tried my workaround, running the headphones through my mixer to “amplify” the cue output of the MTP2, but will be sorting that out before my next “big” gig….   Just my .02 as a Noob, and user of the MTP2.   I’m sure anyone would tell you, good DJ headphones are a must, no matter what you play on, be it Mixtrack, DDJ-S?, Denon MC?000, or CDJs/TTs and a DJM…… but just thought I’d tell you that you should think about it…          Moonshadow

wondering if the OP has made a purchase, and I offer up this tidbit, as I am soon to be purchasing a set of speakers, and am on a budget.   I have been researching PA speakers a lot and have made 2 recent trips to Guitar Center to listen to PA speakers.   I decided on a pair of 12″ as they sound better than 15″ to me.  I am settled on the EV ZLX 12″ tops, and will be adding a small sub to start with.   I decided on the EV because they sounded great, even loud, and because they are a reputable, recommended brand name, and also because they have the “classy” look I am after for weddings and such.   I also liked the Behringer B212D over the Mackie Thumps, and would still consider them if budget was super important.   Thankfully my wife is behind me on this and I am able to consider some more mid-range speakers.   The more high end Mackies, as well as the JBL and QSC speakers, all sounded great to me.   I chose the EV ZLX, the more expensive EV, JBL, QCS, and Mackie speakers just didn’t sound that much better or louder to warrant the price.   I think I would rather have 4 tops than 2 QSCs…LOL   If you can swing it, make a trip to a store that will let you listen to some speakers, that was a big help in my choice, I had almost settled on ordering the Thumps because of internet recommendations, and I’m sure they’re great if you don’t mind the muddy sound….LOL  just my $.02, I’m a noob, and by no means a trained ear ….   Let us know how you’re doing, if you’ve made a choice, and let us know if you think the EV’s would fit into your budget.   You could always be careful not to blow them for a few gigs and then add the sub later….  I’m looking at the ZXA1 sub to start, just thought I’d add that……………….    Moonshadow

Just wondering if you’d narrowed down a short list of active speakers… I’m looking into active as it just seems a better fit to me than passive speakers and an amp…    I have narrowed down my choice and decided upon EV ZLX 12″ tops.   I will be starting out with a small sub, and for the music types you listed, be careful with the speakers until you can add a sub.   I am choosing the 12″ tops after a couple trips to Guitar Center to listen to speakers, and if at all possible I would do just that, go to a store that will let you listen to a few different speakers.   I have not been taking this purchase lightly, and doing lots of research, and in my 2 A/B/C comparison sessions, I liked the Behringer B212D, the Mackie Thumps sounded muddy, the Alto seemed to lack bass, but I never played around with nor cranked up the alto,  the more expensive Mackies, JBLs, and QSCs all sounded great and I am sure they’re all good product.  For me, the bang for the buck, with the presentation I’m looking for, etc…. the answer was the EV ZLX speakers, the Behringer was close but don’t have the classy looks like the EV for weddings and such, and EV seemed a little better sound when up close to clipping.   Also, hoping to have better long term results with the not so low end speakers. (still plan to buy a 3rd for backup before long)  I second the advice to not use HiFi speakers, I have been using 4 12″ “floor speakers” and a Sansui 6060 for my small parties and gigs so far, and although they get loud, they’re not as portable and I wouldn’t expect them to last many more gigs pushing them that hard, as the actual PA are made to play loud I’d expect them to be fine for years of gigs to come.    once again, just my $.02 as a noob, hope my rambling is more help than hindrance….    moonshadow

Thanks for the input Chuck….    I was sondering basically the same thing.   The controllers that are USB powered would black out when the power cycles or goes off on the laptop I’m assuming, in the case of a restart…. but in most cases this would still be OK and allow me to leave the CD player and analog mixer out of the setup… might not be an acceptable backup for an important gig like a wedding, but for a small house party it would do…

as far as the other reply above, I’m getting what he meant, picturing a NI Z2 mixer, with USB hub, and an aux input that would be used for another DJ setup, a backup or alt. audio source, etc….    hope my rambling is more a help than hindrance …..     Moonshadow
