The Denon MCX8000 has definitely caught my attention, and I’m hoping for more similar options in the near future… I’m hoping to upgrade sometime this year, I currently use a Reloop Terminal Mix 8 but want something that works as a standalone and this Denon looks like it ticks all the boxes… best of luck! I can relate… I am a single father of 3 children. My oldest is 9, then the next will be 6 in March, and my youngest will be 3 in June. I find that the only way I get much ME time is to sacrifice sleep. I do get a bit of time for my music every other weekend when they go see their mom. I also have plenty to do when I’m not parenting, bathing, cooking, cleaning, washing laundry… and DJing isn’t my only passion, so making time for practicing has been very limited lately. There is only a certain amount of time in a day, and always more that you need/want to do than you have time for… it’s a balancing act for sure. I find that most of my mixing time comes late at night, when volumes need watched closely so kiddos can sleep… for this reason I’m looking into getting a better, more comfortable set of headphones. I also have a little time once in a while in the day, while the older two are at school, but that isn’t a regular thing. Best of luck to all the other DJ parents out there! I found a great T-shirt on FB the other day, it says “some people call me a DJ, the most important ones call me DAD” ….

    @Vintage Didn’t mean to badmouth the tm8… 🙂
I love mine a lot! There were a lot of reasons I chose it. I preordered mine, sx2 wasn’t out yet. I like the rgb pads above the jogs, long faders, and many other aspects. I would love to have a visual around the jogs for play head location, but am learning to do without that. I would love it to be a standalone mixer, but the aux in is great, it can route to Serato or straight to output, so makes adding to your setup very versatile and can be used for backup in the event of a reboot or laptop issue. Flip is something I would like to try as well, may pick up a neon or some add on that will open that doorway. Gain, eq, filter, etc would be nice to have on the aux. input, the way you can route the sx2 channels is cool but still not “perfect”… I don’t think there is a “perfect” … But do agree with needing to find your workflow, and as I said, I still use my mixtrack pro 2 a lot.
I would put more consideration into a redline bag, but don’t see a decksaver for the tm8, so I might get a flight case soon as they seem to be available now here in the states. Oh, and I didn’t say the tm8 will HAVE to be enough, I said that the sx2 is something I have drooled over for a while but for now the tm8 WILL be enough… :). There’s a few things on the pioneer that just aren’t to my liking and so I don’t justify the purchase.
I am hoping for a Reloop Terminal Mix 12/16 or something someday, with standalone mixer and source matrix, flip controls, playhead indicator around the AWESOME jogs, metering per channel and on master, DVS capability, 2 mic inputs, and the list goes…….. LOL.

Budget and expectations…? My personal setup includes a pair of EV ZLX 12″ tops, and a ZXA1 Sub. It is good for smaller venues, but now I would probably go with an EKX 15″ sub, or 18 if that’s your thang. I DO LOVE how portable the little sub is though, and I do smaller events with varied types of music where it shines. Others I am sure will chime in about different speakers, but as stated above, listening is important.
For lighting, I am still building my rig, mini kinta x2, 4play CL, and four slim led par lights. Hope to add a laser, 4bar flex, and more wash/uplighting, as well as DMX control. Someday make it a pair of stands with a 4play CL, 4bar flex, mini kinta, and laser each.
I would watch videos, check them out in person if possible, and try to imagine your long term goals and find something that makes a good starter setup and is also part of a long term plan. Let us know your budget, or how much you’d be willing to save/finance, as well as your intentions and expectations. Different brands are also more, or less, available and popular depending on where u live, so that might be a factor.
Best of luck and keep us posted.

The NV looks nice and is something I would definitely consider, along with the Denon 4000/6000 offerings and the Reloop Terminal Mix 8, and finally the SX2 from Pioneer. If you KNOW that you’re serious, otherwise that would be a lot to spend.
I started with a mix track pro 2, and still have/use it regularly. It is in my living room at the moment. I upgraded to a TM8 and love it, but sometimes wish I had gotten something that works as a standalone mixer. The MC6000 didn’t make the cut for me because of a few reasons but I can see where it would be about perfect for some. I wanted the big jogs and pads, and the Reloop had a similar layout to the MTP2 I had started with. I also like the long pitch faders as I’m working without sync and still without beat grids on many tracks.
The SX2 is something I have drooled over but for now the tm8 will be enough, and I was just gifted an iPad so that will be my standard “auxiliary input device” most of the time once I get it set up (not an iTunes user yet). I will still keep my analog mixer and 800mk2 setup in the car, and use it sometimes if needed.
Try to imagine all the ways you will use your kit, and consider things like a controller that is not USB powered but AC powered, an aux input is nice (TM8 allows aux as well as mic to go through Serato or straight through to output). Consider backup plans. Consider resale if you’re not sure/serious about DJing, or future proofing your purchase if you are. Consider the availability of stuff like decks avers and flight cases, I still haven’t seen a deck saver for the TM8, but hope to get a hard case or bag soon. I hope this helped, keep us posted…

I’m not sure how to post a picture directly to the thread, might be a good thing to add to the beginning of a thread like this. I posted a picture of my table at a recent gig onto my Facebook Page. If you’d care to look it’s facebook.com/benewahbeats …. The picture I posted just now doesn’t show the complete setup with lighting and PA, but if anyone wants a list I will gladly make one. I will watch this thread to see all of the setups posted as well as to see if anyone posts directions about putting a picture straight into the thread as was done above. Forgive me for not being internet savvy. Thanks to all those who contribute to this site, keep shining folks…. Moonshadow

I’m totally glad that I read this one, just food for thought, but I have a question… as was asked above, any input on the issue of feedback? I’m thinking of getting something like a DBX Drive Rack unit of sorts… Any input would be most welcomed! Keep shining folks….

I usually return home with my gear, unpack what I don’t want to leave in the car overnight, usually just the laptop bag and controller, and then do my best to unwind and get to sleep before the daylight comes…. I find that I’m wound up after a gig and I listen to some of my favorite tunes that weren’t appropriate for the gig, usually mellow stuff. I’ve been considering some sort of “gig-log” , not like what you see on youtube, but a personal journal of my thoughts after the gig, what worked, what didn’t, etc… just for future reference. Keep shining folks…..

I would say that the Scratching course is definitely good stuff and you should keep your eyes peeled for the next round. I’m wondering when there will be more info on the Digital DJ Masterclass which is now closed. I also read something recently about the wedding DJ course being redone soon, if memory serves correctly. I’m considering both if timing works out when they are open. Keep shining….

Agreed, Serato DJ is nice… if you’ve done much prep to your tracks in Intro, such as cue points, it should transfer over. The Neon looks nice and is on my wishlist, my birthday is 5 days after Christmas and it’s one of the cheapest things on my list, so one of the only things I could ask the wife for without her thinking that I’m joking….LOL I have the Mixtrack Pro 2 as well as Terminal Mix 8, and can see uses for the Neon with either. Setting it to deck 3 or 4 and leaving it in sample mode for instance, when using with TM8. Best of luck, especially if you decide to switch with little time to adjust before a gig. Again, sticking to Serato would likely be best in that case.

On a side note, why are you not supposed to play out on Intro….part of the license agreement or something?

Let us know how the weekend goes….

Chuck, at $65 that Art box might be something I want in my gig bag… can it be used for two separate mono sources, such as guitars?

Anyone have any opinion on the ART brand, I’ve seen a couple other bits they make that caught my eye, namely the Graphic EQ. Not cheap and not a brand I’ve heard of before.

Always good into to be found on these forums…

King of Snake, that Peavey setup is something that I had considered, looks like a nice little setup. I ultimately chose some ZLX12P tops and a sub, as these fit into my long term plans better. How are you liking the Peavey setup?

My intention was to make a thread about live sound related stuff, where we could all post questions as you have above, I have a handful as well. Basically a running conversation for everyone. I hadn’t seen much if any info on DDJT forums about live sound related topics and figured that there surely must be some folks on here interested or experienced in that area.

After having another read of the sub-forum descriptions, “music industry” would seem to fit this into the gear section… The Non-DJ chat seems aimed more toward a lounge type area for other thigs, not music related at all… The Gear section, judging by thread and post count, also gets more traffic. This might get more views, replies, questions, and just be generally more useful to the community in the gear section. What do Chuck and Terry think on that one? If it’s easy to do, moving the thread, feel free to do so if you think it would be more benefit to the community. If that’s not easily done, we could simply make a post stating that this will be continued in the gear section, and then start a new community discussion in that section.

More on the topic of live sound. Chuck mentioned EQing a room, would you guys suggest doing so with your ears and an EQ, or would you consider something like a DBX Drive Rack and RTA microphone? I’d been looking into the DBX and Behringer stuff, EQs and Feedback fighting devices like DriveRack, but considering what can be done “in the box” with digital consoles, I’m not sure if rack gear is even necessary. If there was to be a rack, it would likely have a power conditioner, and a FEW pieces to process the monitor and FOH outputs, but no compressors, gates, limiters, FX units, Crossovers, etc.

Does anyone have experience with digital mixers? I’m researching and hope to pick one up in spring but have nowhere near me to check one out in person. I’m considering the Behringer X32 Compact/Producer, as well as the Soundcraft Expression 1 or possibly the Expression 2 with 24ch. I also have looked at the Allen&Heath Qu- mixers, but at this point I think it has come down to the Behringer and Soundcraft. I plan to use this whenever I need more than just a single microphone. Conferences, corporate events, weddings, etc. Eventually, once I collect the rest of the necessary gear I plan to move into doing sound and lighting for local/regional bands and small festivals.

I will be helping with an event again in June which is multiple days, with a small stage and multiple live performers in the evenings. Last June I helped with this annual event, I provided lighting and “canned music” during an afternoon when no bands were playing. I also played music between their sets, roughly 10 hrs of mostly blues and rock all together. Next June I think I will be helping again, with music and lighting, but may be asked to do more.

Aside from the mixer, my list of stuff to collect includes of course, a host of XLR cables of varying lengths, mic. stands, vocal and drum mics, and a few other bits. My long term goal, 2-3 year timeframe, is to expand my PA system to be able to handle up to 500 people in large venues or outdoors. I have my sights set on a handful of additional ZLX12P powered speakers, these will be for monitors/fills. The speakers I have my eye on for FOH are the EV ETX series, likely 12″ tops and I’ve been looking at the 15″ subs, but a few folks have suggested the 18″ subs. Any input on 15″ vs 18″ would be great.
I’m thinking eventually I may need 4 subs, any input on how many speakers I’d need for up to 500 people outdoors would be great. Also, input on FOH speakers other than the EV ETX series would also be welcomed. The monitors will definitely be EV ZLX12P speakers, as I have 2 already, a third to be acquired soon. For the price and features, I think the ZLX are a great choice.

Any input would be most welcomed, I’ll wait to see what Chuck and Terry say in response before I ask any more. Have some questions about Microphones and a few other bits. If you guys think we should move or restart this in the gear section, don’t reply just yet, might as well wait and I’ll pose these questions again there. I’d also be more than happy to do the legwork of “moving” the thread if it needs “restarted” there and some cut/paste to get the questions above, and the great info on Ohms, Watts, etc. all moved over. Not sure if you can easily just move the whole thread on your end, but I’m somewhat injured and will have some time over the next couple days…

Thanks again to all who make this website and it’s forums so great!

HAHA Deathy, right on! Not really hi-jacked, I was meaning for this thread to be a discussion on DDJT for anything relating to live sound, gear, techniques, etc. Still not sure if the NON-DJ chat was the best section of the forum for it, but don’t think that there is enough need for a separate section for live sound, since this is DIGITAL DJ TIPS and all… mods may be right that the gear section would be a good place for it as well, but when I started the thread I just didn’t think a live sound discussion fit well into the digital DJ gear section. It is what it is, and I’d imagine we could always move it if that would be better.

This is exactly why I chose powered speakers…. let the manufacturer do all that figuring part, it’s much more aligned with my K.I.S.S. practices to just get audio signal and power to the speakers and let them do their thing, with speakers and amps all nicely matched. I know there are pros/cons to both setups, but for me the powered speakers were the way to go.

Not sure of the setup in question, but having 2 speakers placed away from the rest would normally need some kind of delay applied, wouldn’t they? Unless of course they are all pointed inward towards a dancefloor and distances were fairly close.

Delay is something I’ve been looking into, as I will be helping out with an event that is spread out over a decent area, and am hoping to provide “fill” to an area about 50-75 yards away from the stage.

    Keep shining peeps…. gotta run…
