Just my $.02 as a fellow noob…. I have a Mixtrack Pro 2, and am looking to upgrade.   It is a wonderful tool for learning to DJ, and also should be great for house parties and smaller gigs, as it did this just fine for me.   The problem I’m having with the MTP2 arose at a recent gig, full dancefloor, PA cranked up pretty good, and I could not hear the cue for the life of me….   I haven’t got the best headphones, hope to fix that soon, and I haven’t gotten the best ears, but the same headphones get WAY TOO LOUD on my analog mixer, the issue is that the MTP2 is very quiet.   My suggestion, if you plan to eventually play out on the gear you get, look heavily into something with a more “pro” build quality.   Look into things like available cases/bags (have yet to find a hard case set up for the MTP2), decksavers being avail. for that model(if there was one for the MC2000 a couple months ago I would have bought both the MC2000 and the decksaver)   and things that will make a difference when it comes time to play out.    If you’re happy with a tool for learning, playing your first couple small gigs, and likely upgrading controllers down the road…. maybe keep looking at the Numark, otherwise, I would look at the NI controllers if you’re sure you want Traktor, or possibly Denon ….  but I wouldn’t consider the MTP2 to be a gig worthy piece of kit, I love mine, but it’s just not up to par for taking out and about, or for using in a LOUD environment…. just my beginner views, let us know what you decide on….

Hello,  I will give my limited input.   I am currently shopping for speakers as well, and have recently made 2 trips to a guitar center to listen to PA speakers.  I agree with the above comment about speaker size and sound quality.   Comparing like speakers, just the 12″ vs 15″ version, I prefer the 12″ for sound quality.   I always liked 12″ speakers over 15″ ones when it came to home and car stereos, just personal preference there I think.   I listened to speakers from Behringer, Alto, EV, JBL, QSC, and Mackie.   I have decided on a pair of EV ZLX 12″ tops, and a single ZXA1 sub for my starter system, and will be ordering them shortly.   If I like the sub I will later add a second, or look into a bigger one for when I play larger events/venues.   The ZLX 12″ speaker I previewed was loud, clear, and a fairly full sound, lacking only slightly in bass.   Since I play only a little bass heavy music, and lots of rock, classic rock, and country, I think this setup will be great.   The ZXA1 sub might not be the best for a lot of EDM music, but it’s small, portable, and should add nicely to a pair of 12″ tops.   To me the Thumps sounded muddy and just not at all clear.   Even the 12″ didn’t sound good, and not just when cranked up, but also at lower volume.  The Behringer B212D sounded good, price was good, but I’m weary of buying lower end PA speakers.  The EV has the name/quality that I’m looking for I hope, and had a nice classy look to them unlike the B212D and Thump.   It was the best option for me at this point.   I do plan to upgrade later on with a 3rd 12″, a trio of 15″ tops, and a pair of larger 15″-18″ subs…. but not until they become necessary and I have had a chance to research and listen a lot more.   I will be getting a 3rd ZLX 12″ top soon, as a backup so I’m not running 1 speaker at an event, in case of a failure.    Just thought I’d chime in with my $.02 …..   I’ll be following this thread over the next couple weeks, in case there is any more input or an update from the OP…..

Terry,    are you sure that the SR won’t do backspins?   that’s one of the controllers on my list and that’s almost a dealbreaker on getting the SR…..    Let me know, I’m looking to upgrade to a Serato controller that is “pro” enough to use for a few years, something with good audio quality, loud cue volume, balanced outs are a plus, and using most/all of the features of Serato DJ is a plus….. almost considering the MC2000 for it’s small size, but it just doesn’t seem right for moving up from a mixtrack pro 2.   I will be looking into the VCI380, MC6000 Mk2, and SR more thoroughly….. and checking back on this thread.    I have to make up my mind, because as soon as I get a couple hoops jumped through, and my business bank account set up, I will be ordering PA, a few lighting bits, and a new controller.   Thanks to all who make this site so great…

Man, sorry to hear about your loss…..

I am in a similar boat right now, I have a Serato controller, but it’s not up to par for gigs.   I would like to stick to Serato, actually I’d like to upgrade from Intro to Serato DJ.  I have been looking into the Denon MC2000 for it’s size, but it’s an Intro controller and doesn’t appear to be set up for taking advantage of the full software.   I will now be looking into the 6000Mk2, the DDJ-SR, and the Vestax VCI-380.   I am hoping to find something with loud, high quality output, and to make good use of the full Serato software.   Also, I am concerned with cue volume, as my current controller is almost unusable when the PA is rockin’ loud.  I will be following this thread to see what other input is given, and also in hopes that the OP lets us know what he ended up deciding to go with, and how it’s working out.      Moonshadow

    Hello,

I am still fairly new to this, and for now I have found that using headphones is working OK for me,  I mix the main out with the cue, keeping the main output just loud enough to be able to hear what the crowd does, and then the cue cuts over it so I can beatmatch and get the song ready to bring in, or preview some songs to pick what’s next, etc….  I’m hearing the same thing in both ears and sometimes use one side of the headphones, sometimes both….   I have yet to try booth monitors, so can’t give any input there.  Hope this is at least slightly helpful, but thank you for posting, because reading this thread has helped me get to thinking about a few things.  Keep shining,   Moonshadow

Good point, I will be including more about the stuff I will be doing, like parties, weddings, etc…    I live in N.Idaho, in a county without a stoplight.  You won’t find any club or rave DJs around St. Maries ….  I plan to do mobile DJ work, doing private parties, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, and such, as well as set up gigs with local venues(bars) where I will bring PA, Lighting, and the talent…(don’t always want to be the DJ, or the only DJ…)  I’d also like to work with local bands, doing sound and lighting.   Thanks for checking it out bro… any more feedback will be great… this was made with all provided pics and templates, etc…. I will be changing them out and adding more of my own soon, with lighting examples and such…. Thanks again, Keep Shining,      Isaiah

Please let us know if the output volume is good, especially the cue volume.  Also wondering about the mic channel, does it sound good, I have read about quite a few folks having issues with mics on the SX… also, wondering if that has been fixed on the newer SX models.  I like them both, hard choice… glad I have lots to learn on the mixtrack pro 2 and DJ Intro…

I haven’t got the SR …..YET…LOL   But unless you’re really invested in VDJ, like really used to it and have the full version, I would say the SR would be better used with Serato DJ…. it’s made for Serato, layout/design is set up to use Serato DJ, and it comes with the full version… I used VDJ home for a little while, just messing around, and I really love Serato Intro… can’t wait to outgrow it and get the full version, with the SR… for now, I’m considering a Denon MC2000 for something a little more gig friendly, as I have yet to be to a point where Intro is really holding me back at all… and I’d like to have the smaller sized controller, even in the future when I have more “pro” gear…  basically, instead of upgrading software, I’m upgrading hardware, then later when I have $ for the hardware that will benefit most from the new software, I’ll have both… I think I can still learn a great deal more with Serato Intro…. Thanks to all on DDJT… hope to hear more input on the DDJ-SR …..

OK folks, I will post this here first, and likely follow up with more specific threads in appropriate sub-forums.

For starters, I am NEW to all of this, I have always been into home and car audio, not necessarily a “bumping” system, but quality sound, although I had my share of “systems” in my 20s…LOL  I love good music of all types and genres, basically anything upbeat, loved dancing when I was younger(and embarrassing my wife now..LOL)  I was in the DJ club in High School, I actually met my wife helping DJ her freshman orientation dance.  I never went anywhere with it, back then I couldn’t afford a good mixer and tables, and life, marriage, kids, etc…

This brings us to the recent past… I picked up a cheap score on Craigslist, it’s a pair of entry level Numark tables and an iM1 mixer, also got a little iPod.  I use this with my home stereo, one TT, use the mixer to get a few more inputs, as an iPod dock, and lately to record my mixes and listen back… also recording some samples from records…  I have a Mixtrack Pro 2 and am learning a lot, hope to outgrow the MTP2 and Intro by spring, and have an upgrade path chosen.  I may get a Denon MC2000 and stick with DJ Intro for a while, as the MTP2 isn’t up to road use IMHO, and I can give the Mixtrack to my son when I get a new lappy…

Now, on to the present/future….LOL   I am working on trying to get some time with my music, and time with Serato and the Mixtrack a little every day, it’s actually working out about 4-5 days a week with practice, and listening to tunes every day more than was normal a year ago…  Also, relaxing at night and some during the day when I take breaks, to read online and watch videos about gear, techniques, etc…  I hope that while we’re snowed in this winter, I can really work hard at all of this and get a lot better.  I have done some small parties, and a couple of wedding receptions for my friends, have picked up a dance light, decent Shure mic, and am buying more music whenever I get to town…. live miles from pavement, and still like actual CD’s, and vinyl…LOL

For right now, I am doing lots of research, I am hoping to start a mobile entertainment company over the next few months, well by spring, snow is usually around until at least April around here…LOL    I am wanting to do mobile DJ work, like dances, parties, weddings, etc… as well as some bar/club gigs (not really any clubs close, but bars, and I could travel to larger towns to play an actual “club”).  Aside from doing mobile DJ work, I would also like to do sound and lighting for other events, like possibly Karaoke night at a local bar for a special occasion, or for local small bands that could use more PA, or lighting, to make a gig really stand out.  I really want to get into organizing and promoting local events as well, where I could do sound, lights, and possibly also be an opener, for other talent from the area… someday maybe even book some pretty big headliners us locals could open for, like at the casino…(the biggest venue I could think of around here…LOL)

I am looking into PA speakers, lighting, etc… I have a list of gear I’m looking to get, and trying to figure out what to fit into my startup budget…LOL  There’s always more gear to want…LOL  I’ll post the gear list shortly, for input.   Hoping folks can help me get what I need to get started, without buying too much that I don’t need right off the bat… I can always get stuff later, like a gobo projector for weddings and such, where custom gobos might be a hit.. or extra lighting and DMX…

    So, here goes the list.

Audio sources, I’m looking into small format CD players, like the CMP.800… use a CD player for backup right now, and want a decent one, but no need for something the size of the CDJ800mk2 I have on loan right now.  I use an entry level Shure mic, hope to get a couple more, better, Shure mics in the future, like an SM58 and the Beta58a.  I am running the Mixtrack Pro2, along with other inputs and the mic, through a Stanton M.203 mixer, I like the mixer and it was a steal, $29 refurbished.   I hope to someday own a better mixer, possibly Pioneer, as well as more pro controller, like the DDJ-SR, and Denon MC2000.  Also, as this all progresses, I’d like to get a “quality” turntable, looking at AT-LP1240, as well as ST.150, will also research the new Reloop tables with MIDI buttons.  I’d love to someday be able to use vinyl and DVS well.  Last, I want to get Maschine Mikro Mk2, and give producing a try, think it would be fun, and think adding Maschine in for live beats might be cool eventually…

As far as PA is concerned, I’m mainly looking to get powered/active speakers.  I think my startup setup will be a pair of EV ZLX 12″ tops, and a ZXA1 Sub… later I plan to add :  second sub, 2 15″ tops, 2 15″-18″ subs…;ater a backup for each pair of tops(3rd ZXA 12 and P1500x)_ Looking at maybe the Cerwin-Vega P-Series to fill this role, or something similar.  I’m sure new products will be out before I get this far…LOL  Something like that would be versatile, would give me backup plan, or secong system for ceremonies and such… also, the whole lot would be plenty for a large venue I’d imagine, something like a gymnasium, or should even be plenty for outdoors…

Concerning lighting, I have a Mini Kinta, and hope to add a stand, 2nd Mini Kinta, and 4Play CL, along with a starter uplighting setup like the slimpack56… beyond that I’m looking to add lasers, fog, a strobe like the mega strobe 12fx, something like Gobo Zoom 2.0, more wash/uplighting fixtures, Obey40 or the wireless version,  10ft truss, etc…. someday a pair of scanners like the Inno series, and maybe a pair of moving heads…. and I like the Motion Drape set, would be cool for certain cicrumstances.  A lot of this is situational, like the strobe and gobo zoom, etc… but I think the above would set me up for pretty much anything, and blow a lot of local folks away when they see the show… even without the moving heads and scanners….

I am also looking to pick up a better set of headphones, a table and something along the lines of the Grundorf carpeted façade… as well as cables, adapters, black extension cords and power bars, etc… so I can be ready for whatever comes my way…and a gig van….LOL

I will post a list of what I’m considering as the barebones startup gear later, sometime this week probably.  And looking for input on that, as well as what else I may be overlooking, or what would be good to get next, etc….  I plan to keep the MTP2 for at least a couple paid gigs, then get something more pro.  One bit at a time, but after newyears and the kids Christmas is done, it’s time to get serious….  I plan to spend about 2-3K on startup, about 2-4K on additional gear down the road, and about 4K on additional PA down the road… Pleas folks, if you have read this far… please help me with the startup list of somewhere in the $2000-3000 range…

Thanks again to all who make this site so great, sorry for the book, and thanks to any and all who take the time to respond, give input, or even read this whole post….LOL

    Sincerely, Isaiah

Oh, and input on the name I’m considering would be great.   My middle name is Moonshadow, thinking of using that, but not sure I want to be DJ Moonshadow…. thinking just calling myself Moonshadow, or something like that… I want to name my company Benewah Beats, after the county we live in… any thoughts are welcomed…  keep shining friends…

I started on the Virtual DJ Home, free download… played around with it for a while, and then got a controller that came with DJ Intro…. I love it and hope to upgrade to a better controller and the full software soon… I’d say look into something along the lines of the Denon MC2000, or maybe the above mentioned DDJ-SB from Pioneer.  I love my Mixtrack Pro 2, but the cue output is just not usable for gigs, the build isn’t up to road use and haven’t round a case for it yet(although I am getting a Magma bag and decksaver soon), and the Pads(what sold me on the MTP2) aren’t that well though out in my opinion, at least not for moving beyond what it does out of the box.  Using up the top 4 pads was a bad call in my book, now that I understand more about how this all works and is used.   The DDJ-SR and Serato DJ(not Intro) is what I’m planning on upgrading to eventually, but may stick to Intro and get the MC2000 for a while, it looks to be built well, and I like the size…would still be useful for smaller gigs and house parties.  There are other options for Traktor and VDJ, like a Mk1 Kontrol S2 which might be had at a deal right now… or the MC3000 looks good to me too(I like Serato and will be doing more looking into the MC2000-3000(for use with Serato DJ), as well as using the MTP2 with Serato DJ, before I buy anything else.  Take this advice as you wish, but also know that I’m a NOOB…LOL   I would just play with VDJ and other free or trial software, until you can get something like a Denon, Pioneer, or NI controller… you will likely have lots of fun and be asked to come play music for friends and family and then……LOL    Many thanks to all who make DDJT so great!

this is all good info, I’m a noob and taking in so much info from this site….  would it make sense to come way early, and if possible, get your cables into the mixer while you won’t be in anyone’s way?  Then, before your set just set up your laptop stand, laptop, and controller, and plug into the cable you already have ready to go… check mixer input matrix, and whatnot, and wait to have your turn…  Another query, do DJ’s often work together to help this transition work out more seamlessly, like saying “I’ll play my last song on x channel, so you can have y to fade in, and it’ll be A or B song, but definitely something 120 BPM… ” , or something of the likes…? Also, in most venues, is there space to put your own gear, or space for a small folding table you can bring for your gear… I guess this is going to depend on the area, the specific club, etc….   I will be “scouting” local venues over the next few months, and hoping to make some connections ….  sorry to hijack, but thought this would be good additional conversation and somewhat relevant..

some of the banter on this site is GREAT…. hope to get to know some of you over the coming years so I can join in….LOL  to the OP, if the resident DJ and venue want you, and have heard some of your mixes…. I say follow the great advice above and play on…. plan your set out some, plan some transitions and stuff, have extra music ready, etc…. I’m sure you’ll rock the house…. and about the haters, also great advice above…   so much great advice on this site…
