Judging by the global lack of availability right now and the number of people who contact Digital DJ Tips with questions about it, the Numark Mixtrack Pro is the budget controller that’s grabbed everyone’s attention over the past few months.
And not surprisingly, too – it’s well built, well laid out, just the right size, has excellent jogwheels, comes with a built-in sound card, and retails at a very keen price: US$249 / £169
/ €194.
The excellent video above from JLDJUK clearly covers all the features of the controller. Much of this stuff is pretty obvious to seasoned digital DJs, but to those of you who are just starting out (and while it can be used by pro DJs – I know of at least one who gigs with it every week – it is essentially a beginners’ unit), you’ll find this video invaluable.
It covers many of the questions we get asked repeatedly about the unit, so if you’re interested in starting out in digital DJing and have got the Mixtrack Pro on your shortlist, take a look.
Mixtrack or Mixtrack Pro?
One of the most common questions we are asked is about what the differences are between the Mixtrack and the Mixtrack Pro, and which is “best”. JLDJUK has added another short video explaining these differences:
But I can’t find one anywhere! What should I buy instead?
For those of you who simply can’t get this unit (and judging by your emails, that’s more than a few of you), two alternatives that are easy to get currently globally are:
- The Mixtrack plus an external sound card – See the video above for a comparison, any of these sound cards will work great with it. Here’s our full Mixtrack review
- The Vestax Typhoon – Smaller and a bit more expensive, but a good controller, now shipping with Traktor and Virtual DJ LE versions (check before ordering that yours comes with both programs. though). Here’s our full Typhoon review

[ link ]You’re in Germany, aren’t you? It works in UK/USA but that Sony fingerprinting of music and subsequent denial of service is pathetic… how 20th century can you get? As if the guys using a Sony track to demonstrate the equipment is anything other than free publicity for the music. Sorry you can’t see it nonetheless!
[ link ]Yes, I’m in Germany. Just wanted to let you know. Unfortunately, the same thing happened with a few recent vids from DJTT. Hopefully it’s just coincidence and not Youtube tightening up their filters.
[ link ]I think it’s Sony being silly. Apparently they’ve got fingerprinting software that spots the use of any songs on their labels (which is plenty) in whatever context (even as demo tunes in a DJing video) and flips their restrictions in. A US VPN would help you (and get you Hulu to boot
)
[ link ]hey sos, i’m from germany too.
i order to be able to watch this clip, you should run hotspotshield.
[ link ]works everytime for me. lots of videos get blocked, even if the song is just running in the background.
Although the Mixtrack Pro is good. I prefer (and use) the original Mixtrack. I prefer to be able to get my own soundcard. I have a M-Audio Fast Track Pro which has unbalanced and balanced outputs so I would be prepared for any situation. Also since I’m a producer I also use my M-audio as recording and tracking interface with Propellerhead Reason and Record.
Ultimately Numark has made some good budget products. I would like them to create a Mixtrack MkIII that is more metal though and built in balanced output and mic input. I’d use that forever.

There are curiously few of these type of workhorse controllers. A VCI-100 Mk 1 would do the job for you though, no?
[ link ]Yeah it would. I am considering getting one. Possibly the DJ Tech Tools SE version. I don’t like the original because of the silver color. lol
I know. I’m picky! lol
[ link ]I have the Numark Omni Control and the metal casing on it is fantastic. If Numark could take the Omni’s casing and the same amount of buttons/rotaries and add the jog wheels from the Mixtrack they’d have a killer product.
[ link ]The Omni is built really well. I agree with the combined efforts it would be awesome.
[ link ]good review,,,its good to see an english video…but i cant seem to find any details on the quality of the sound card,,,is it good enough for pro’s to use in a club ?
[ link ]only 3 knobs for each effect rack ?!?! hmmmm,,big problem for me..
thks for the review..

[ link ]Greetings,
I started using Virtual DJ with the Mixtrack Pro. Very cool. What’s the best way to use an iPod as a backup system? Meaning is there a way to connect the iPod so that I can instantly switch over to the iPod if my laptop crashes?
[ link ]Not as such – some controllers have a “thru” that lets you do this, but not the Mixtrack Pro. Just have the iPod at hand with the right lead and be ready to switch over if you have to…
[ link ]I have a choice, either buy this MixTrack Pro or a slightly used Hercules RMX for about the same price, which would you recommend as the better starter controller?
[ link ]If good jogwheels are important to you, Mixtrack Pro. If sturdiness and flexibility is what matters, the RMX has the edge. If the RMX happens to come with a FULL version of Virtual DJ, that swings it further in the RMX’s direction (you’ll want a full version of your software).
[ link ]I don’t really scratch, so RMX it is! Thanks
[ link ]I have the mixtrack and i believe 249 USD is steal for what it does. Touch platters are extremely sensitive u can scratch just like vinyl its big enough too not like the RMX or 4-MX . You have full control over effects. I give it a 9 out of 10
[ link ]Has anyone successfully paired the pro with traktor yet? I’m really interested in this but i’m worried about losing some functionality. ive heard you can use the .tsi for the regular mixtrack, but, again, I’m not sure if there is a new mapping for the pro. any info?
[ link ]I’m contemplating if i should buy this or the normal mixtrack. The normal mixtrack is cheaper at 127 flat then i could grab a soundcard which would be cheaper.
I’m a normal person just trying to do this for fun \ mess around. Not really planning to do anything more. Should i just buy the mixtrack and it should be fine for me ?
[ link ]The Mixtrack or Mixtrack Pro will suit you well. If you can get the Mixtrack and a good sound card cheap, go for it! It’s slightly harder to set up but not very much so and the trade-off is more flexibility and arguably better sound quality. Look at our round-up of sound cards for good models.
[ link ]Thanks, Phil!
I can get both the Mixtrack + Numark DJ iO tax free + shipping free comes out to be 187 which is perfect. Thanks for the input !
[ link ]Just got my Mixtrack Pro and also purchased a single PA speaker so I want to do output in Mono. Anyone know how I might do this in a non-y-splitter way and preferably without upgrading Virtual DJ LE that comes with? I’m on a PC running windows 7 64-bit.
[ link ]hey can i m getting numark mixtrack pro i m confused about the connection. Is it like the usb connects to my laptop and the other directly to the amplifier??
[ link ]Exactly, that’s how it works.
[ link ]hi just wondering can i use an audio 8 with the mixtrack pro cos im happy enough with the sound from the audio 8?
[ link ]If you had pro DJ software, yes. If you had the supplied LE software, no.
[ link ]hi phil im really confused now after watching your review of the rellop mixage.the reloop has the gain controls on the channels which is a big plus but im just curious on your opinion of which jog wheels are better? the mixtrack pro or the mixage?? thanks phil
[ link ]They’re both really good. Mixtrack Pro’s are bigger, though. (In fact, the whole unit is bigger.)
[ link ]Thanks phil mixtrack pro it is so hope they bring out a mixtrack with gain controls
[ link ]Hey Phil unlike many of the DJ’s in here my main purpose is to record mixes. My software choice is Traktor Pro but I need good (enough) controls especially EQ’s and sliders rather than just a keyboard to do it proper. Hence the Mixtrack (leaning towards pro) seems a great layout size and price and has those knobs and sliders and jogs. Q: Traktor Pro will use it’s built in software mixer (that I’m just manipulating with the Mixtrack) to record the sound out right and sound spot-on without any downgrade?
[ link ]Yes, it will.
[ link ]Since i familiar with traktor pro 2. I got a question about mixtrack pro. Does the crossfader and jogwheel will properly work with traktor pro 2? Im about to get either mixtrackpro or hercules dj console 4-mx. But still in the phase of considering. Which one should i get? Any suggestion beside that 2 midi controller?
[ link ]So I’m thinking about either getting this, or the Hercules RMX. I’m leaning toward this, but I need to know…can you record with it using Virtual DJ?
[ link ]Cheers.
Yes you can.
[ link ]Hi Phil, great review above, thanks. I am seriously looking at the MTP right now, but I have a couple of questions (apologies if these have already been asked). What software does this currently ship with? I ask as I have been using VDJ for about a year and I am comfortable with it, but have never used Traktor and from what I have seen it does not look as ‘user friendly’? Also, is it possible to mix with the MTP using headphones to cue the next track, just as you would with conventional vinyl mixing? Thanks for your time
[ link ]It ships with Virtual DJ LE and/or Serato Intro, both are easy to use. Check before buying as I’m not sure what Numark’s current policy is. Yes, you can use your headphones just like with a normal DJ set-up.
[ link ]Great, thanks ever so much for the reply
[ link ]Hi,
i want to buy a mixtrack (not the pro version)
Can you use mixtrack with virtual dj 7.0?
and also can u use one sound card with front(Main) & rear(Monitor/headphone) out put with mixtrack?
Cheers;
[ link ]Dino
As far as I know you can “out of the box” but don’t have one here to test that. If not you can map it yourself or find a mapping at the Virtual DJ forum.
