I’ve had a sneak look at The Wedding Music Canon, a book coming later this month from an experienced US-based wedding DJ covering great tracks to play in wedding DJ sets from the 1950s up until the 2010s.
Thankfully this isn’t a set of AI-generated lists. These are all hand-picked and time-honoured tracks that the author has used in his own wedding DJ sets over the decades. What’s more, he’s passionate about this. He also has a long-running podcast and website covering exactly this topic, and this is the third book he’s written. Previous books have helped couples choose music and also helped DJs programme weddings.

What I like about this book is that it realises there’s a difference between obvious tracks and deeper cuts, and that the less obvious tracks can sometimes be better than the big hits to play at weddings. He has good knowledge of why a lot of these tracks work and shares it with you, and also gives you advice on where to play them and how to use them.
Who’s it for?
It’s a great resource to dip in and out of, especially if you are a less experienced wedding DJ wondering where the best wedding DJs find some of these tracks. And he’s hopefully also provided QR codes to Spotify playlists to help you familiarize yourself with the music in the volume.
I have to be honest, I do love a good book cataloguing music of any type, and this is one that I’m looking forward to adding to my bookshelf when it’s released. More info from the author’s website.
