Smoothie, a song recommendation app, has just been released. It works in the background while you DJ with Traktor Pro 2, and gives a list of song recommendations from your library based on tempo and musical key, and gives you a percentage of how well these songs match what you’re currently playing. It works by tapping into Traktor’s Broadcast feature, and lists tracks that you can then drag onto Traktor.
Do I need this?
Song suggestion apps like this can be a helpful tool for list building and picking a song in a pinch, and DJ software is increasingly coming with such features built in (indeed, the iOS version of Traktor, Traktor DJ, has a feature that is very much like Smoothie). However, until Traktor “proper” catches up, Smoothie definitely fills a niche.
Of course, there’s nothing like knowing your songs inside and out and regularly maintaining your DJ playlists to keep them current, and to keep you from having to flit from list to list in a frantic search for what to play next. After all, crowd reading and song selection are a huge chunk of what you do behind the decks…
• Smoothie is now available for US$1.99 at the App Store. Check the Smoothie website for more details.
