Why Rekordbox Drum Loops Keep Coming Back (And How To Stop Them For Good)

If you’re a Rekordbox user who doesn’t own a DDJ-GRV6 controller, you’ve probably got a load of stock drum loops cluttering up your library. Delete them, and they just come back on restart – it’s a known headache. MixMasterG (the man behind DJCU and DJ Touch 1 Deluxe) showed us the fix, and we’re passing it on.

Why deleting them doesn’t work (and what does)

Rekordbox bundles these loops for use with the Groove Circuit feature on the DDJ-GRV6 unit. There’s a setting under Extensions called “Drum Loop Audio: Automatically Import Audio Files” that’s supposed to control this – but it’s greyed out.

Screenshot of Rekordbox Preferences showing the Extensions tab, with the Stems section open and a "Downloading STEMS Engine" progress bar at 47%. The stems engine is being installed, which is the required step before the drum loop audio setting becomes available.
The trick is enabling stems first – the drum loop setting unlocks once the engine is installed, and you can turn it off – finally!

The reason? It only becomes available once the stems engine is installed, which Rekordbox doesn’t do by default. So here’s how to get rid of them for good:

  1. Delete all the drum loops from your collection
  2. Go to Settings and enable stems – Rekordbox will download and install the stems engine
  3. Head back to the bottom of Extensions – drum loop audio is now available, turn it off
  4. If you don’t want stems either, turn that off too – the drum loop setting stays off
  5. Restart Rekordbox – they’re gone, and this time they stay gone!
