AlphaTheta has announced that its Rekordbox DJ application for iOS and Android now supports Spotify integration, bringing the streaming service’s catalogue of over 100 million tracks to phone/tablet DJing. The update means Spotify Premium users can now access their playlists and stream tracks directly within Rekordbox on smartphones and tablets, matching functionality already available on the Mac and Windows versions.
The integration works with compatible hardware including the DDJ-FLX2, DDJ-FLX4, and DDJ-GRV6, letting DJs mix Spotify tracks using their mobile device either standalone or connected to these controllers. This expands the mobile DJing options considerably – you’re no longer limited to tracks stored on your device, and can pull from Spotify’s extensive catalogue on the fly.
Of course, there are the usual streaming caveats. You’ll need a Spotify Premium subscription (standard Spotify accounts won’t work), and you’ll need a reliable internet connection throughout your set. That makes this less suited to venues with dodgy Wi-Fi, and mobile data costs could add up if you’re streaming full sets over 4G or 5G.
• The Rekordbox update is free for existing app subscribers. You’ll need a Spotify Premium subscription to use the integration, which starts at £11.99 per month in the UK. Availability is subject to regional restrictions – check Spotify’s website for supported countries.
