    Hey Scotto,

I may be able to help you develop your business and possibly even help you develop your DJ skills. That is if you’d be interested. I looked into your post history to see if I could get more information on your business, low and behold, you posted about being from Hawaii. I run my own personal mobile DJ business out here in Honolulu. It’s still pretty new, but it’s doing so much better than I could have imagined in just one years time. I also do side work with two of the top mobile DJ companies on the island. My main co-worker and helper, recently left Hawaii to move back home, so I’m looking for somebody to fill his shoes.

I’ve gotten into quite a bit of lighting over the last six months, and I guess you could say I’m almost in the same boat as you. I share a lot of the same goals that you have about starting a lighting business locally. There is definitely a market for it. Right now, my lighting rig consists of an ADJ light bridge one truss, 16x ADJ mega tri pars, 4x generic moving wash lights, 1x Radius 2.0, and I also have access to more moving spot lights, haze machines, and various other wash lights. All run with Chamsys MagicQ software. It’s not much, but it’s great for the small/medium sized parties I do. Of course, I plan to invest a lot more into my rig and build it into something much, much bigger. But for right now, I’m just taking it one step at a time.

Personally speaking, I feel like the lighting and mobile DJ companies on the island are lazy and don’t do very good jobs at lighting. I still have yet to see anybody fully utilize software DMX on their shows. Most everything I see out here is set it and forget it. It bugs me more than it really should. My plan is to get really good at programming shows so I can start to take lighting to the next level locally. Hopefully to the point where I can program some shows for small local festivals and concerts.

Hit me up if you’re interested. I’ve got an event coming up real soon (less than one weeks time) that I could possibly use your help with. It would be a great time for us to meet, talk shop, and to see if we could work something out that benefits the both of us. Email me at djneekz@gmail.com

Looking forward to hearing back from you! Aloha

Let me get this straight. So because the current generation grew up in a different time and scene from you… they’re the ones to blame for your lack of productivity in the DJ world?

Time for a reality check buddy, You’re living in a fantasy world. Reliving the glory days you lived out fifteen years ago, holding onto those memories; hoping they will one day come back and provide you with the same addrenine rush you experienced years ago. Well, it’s NOT going to happen.

You remind me of those former high school superstar athletes who never stop talking about how good they were “back in the day.” Honestly nobody cares about what they did years ago. life goes on, stop living in the past.

You say the problem is with the youth of today and their bad taste in music. The truth is, the problem is with elitist assholes who talk down to others. They ruin the music for everybody. Regardless of what side of edm they are on.

Thanks. Never thought about it that way, but that makes sense.

thanks for the advice vintage, your right it’s definitely about feeling and mood more than a set playlist.  Cheers!

Thanks for the write up man.  I guess it’s the season of marathons because i’ve got one coming up in about a weeks time too.  I have an idea of what I am going to play for the most part, but could always use more suggestions.

I was advised to play upbeat and motivating music.  They DO NOT want dance music!  Emphasis on the do not.  I mean I can play dance music, but it has to be suited for runners.  So a lot of rock, alternative, classic rock stuff.  Never really played that genre for a gig before.

I guess I was wondering if I could get specifics of what you played or perhaps maybe even a screenshot of the playlist you played to get a better idea of what would work well.  Thanks!

I’m confused, are they just simply mashups?  I have no problems with people playing mashups from record pools, in fact every DJ I know uses them.  A lot of DJ’s even make them themselves, some even established themselves solely as mashup artist’s (see kap slap and 3lau).

However, if it were indeed premixed transitions, yeah id call that pretty shitty and not worthy of an established dj.

in reply to: Transition Tracks.. How do i beatgrid them? #1016346

How I do it is that I first label the tracks title with the BPM’s it transitions to and from.  for example “130-72 Holy Grail” by Jay-Z.  This makes it easy to find in my library and obvious where it transitions into and from.  Then when I beatgrid the track I only beat grid the initial intro of the song, so in this example the part where it’s 130bpm.  This makes it easy to beatmatch the transition song with the outgoing song.  Then when I need to introduce a new song over the transition song, ill just set the pitch fader to the original bpm position and will know that it will be the second bpm listed in the title, so again in this case it will be 72bpm.  I just set new track to 72 bpm and there you go, should be beatmatched already.

Anyone can have a moment of bad… I know I had them.
This is no reason to bash someone, just because today everything ends up on youtube.
If you never had something go wrong in your sets, you may post such things, but then if never anything went wrong you are not a DJ yet.

From what i see it’s just cool to hate on Aoki in the DJ and EDM communities. Much like how it’s cool to hate on levels by Avicii.

When it comes to DJ’s and EDM, the influence of groupthink is powerful and convincing. Most people are going to adhere to social standards without even batting an eye. Rather than making an open minded assessment to judge their personal likeliness of a song or person for themselves, they’re going to play follow the leader and do as everybody else does.

Other times I’ll cut off Track A at some point if the “meat” of Track B kicks in sooner. If Track A seemingly won’t “calm down” musically, then I’ll slowly fade its volume down and play with the EQs on Track A to kill it off, letting Track B musically take over everything.

My main goal is to have things liquid…seamless. I want the two tunes to meld and work together, complimenting one another, so you don’t have a sudden change that throws everyone off. I usually get this most of the time.

Great explanation and use of metaphors, made it really easy to understand your train of thought when you’re mixing and what it is you’re doing exactly.

I think I have this problem where I try to get my mixes “PERFECT” with each and every transition. I’ll listen to the outgoing track outro a handful of times to figure out and see (on the waveform) exactly where I want my transition to mix over, self admittedly obsessing over this aspect of my mix. Trying to get the phrasing perfectly aligned to achieve a “perfect” mix… which I am now realizing is an absurd goal and is causing me to waste a lot of time relistening to the track over and over again. Having taught and trained myself this method over the last year, I feel like my mixes lack creativity now and I rely too much on watching the waveforms and using the preview player to cheat (so to speak). My mixes just seem so stale to me now.

in reply to: Traktor S4 #31717

Solid controller, the pros outweigh the cons, and you can never go wrong with the industry standard when it comes to midi controllers. It’s tested and true. My only small issues (but are def. not deal breakers) are the volume meter LEDs, could be better. Of course most other controllers don’t have them at all. And the other thing is the hot cue and play buttons being too stiff. They work but could be made better.

Yes u can, it’ll come with a previous version of traktor, but all the updates are available for free.

Anyway… who cares? These polls are about as useful as a screen door on a submarine. And your tears are not going to help the situation.

its all up for debate and everybody has their opinion, doesn’t mean anybody’s particular opinion holds more weight than the next. all it means is that the general public prefers to vote for the dj’s in the know, because what the heck do they know about dj’ing? all they know is that “so and so” made this song and i love it, or i like him because everybody else likes him, therefor i will make him the top dj.

its the way of the world bro, deal with it and please stop kicking a dead horse.
