Well…I did it. I bought one. It arrived a few hours ago and so far I really like it. Not sure if I will ever write a full review of it on here, but if you have any question, I try to answer them and if something super excites or annoys me, you will hear it from me too.

I’ve been a controller-only guy before (I mentioned the Hercules DJ Control Steel), but basically I decided to go modular, because I own a lot of CDs and wanted to have a chance to mix analogue, if I wanted to. I’m not against going back to controllers and can imagine that I will, once my Numarks stop working (again depending on my financial situation and the pricing of the available hardware), but for now modular is my way to go.

So in the end I think I’m gonna with the RMX-90. Not gonna order it immediately (I’ll most likely wait a few more weeks), but so far I haven’t seen or heard anything negative about it.

Of course if anybody here still wants to share his or her opinion and experience with it, feel free to do so.

I have a 4 (technically 3) deck setup, consisting of:

Laptop with VDJ (although I also own Traktor and I’m not afraid to use it, I just don’t like it that much)
external 4 Channel mixer (Behringer DJX900 USB)
2 Numark NDX 800 (which I use as controller, but sometimes as CDJs)
Hercules DJ Control Steel (which used to be my main controller, but now I use it only for some Deck 3 stuff)
Numark Orbit (for some extra buttons)

Apart from the mixer, I currently don’t need to replace any of it (And even the mixer doesn’t NEED replacement, although it seems that it will be soon) and like I said earlier, the main reason why I aim for the RMX-90, is that it’s available in a shop that offers installment payment. It’s not a DJ or music store, so they only have very few DJ equipment. I’m even surprised that they have this one!

Basically I’m just jumping at the possibility to upgrade one part of my equipment.

The Serato licence (Apparently the vinyl ships with it too) isn’t even that much of a dealbreaker for me, since I don’t have any other Serato compatible gear and most likely can’t use anything but the mixer (and my Laptop) with it. (Still, it’s nice to have a full license.) Unfortunately I haven’t seen any tests with other DJ software yet. They all say it has fully mappable Midi functionality and some name dropped Traktor and even Ableton, but I haven’t seen anybody actually testing it with any of those.

Okay, in all fairness, even if the Midi mapping isn’t working as well in other softwares, I will most likely still have a good external mixer, but then I could also buy a much cheaper one.

(Note: Apologies if I’m a little bit rambling and it’s hard to understand what I want. It’s the hottest day in years over here and my apartment is on the 5th floor, right under the roof, on the side where the sun is shining for most of the day.)

Yeah, I saw that too. Not saying he isn’t trustworthy or something, but if I spend so much money, I would love to have a few more opinions. It’s still a pretty new piece of equipment, so there isn’t that much out there yet. (Although so far everybody seems to love it and the only negative thing I’ve heard so far is “It’s the same as the RMX 80, only with an audio interface”.)

Okay, let me return to this after a while. 🙂

First something harder. “When I Rock” by Elektrochemie LK (Released in 2000). I have to admit that the Original Mix is a little bit repetetive and takes it’s while until the break starts, that never fails to make me smile, but the Radio version only runs less than 3 minutes, which is too short.

2 years older and a lot more Funky is “That Sound” by DJ Disco (1998), who btw is none other than Koen Groeveneld.

And now a real, personal childhood classic: The track that put Moby on my map. “Feeling So Real” from 1994. Look closely at the black haired woman that sings the lyrics. It’s actually Moby with a wig!

At first I would like to know who do you mean with “Underground DJs”? The term “underground” has been used so losely recently, that it became just another anti-EDM catchphrase. For me, a REAL underground DJ, is someone who spins at (more or less) illegal parties, is probably known by a small part of their local scene and who plays sounds that are so far out that Beatport wouldn’t even touch them with a 10 1/2 foot pole.

Of course within the Disco Sucks Anti-EDM movement, super popular DJs and Producer like Green Velvet or DJ Sneak, who are in the biz for decades, are huge household names, release their tracks as Beatport or iTunes exclusive and play on every mainfloor from Berlin to Ibiza, wave the underground banner, simply because they don’t play EDM. Which is Bullshit, IMO.

Are popular EDM DJs talented: Some of them definitely are! Guetta started out when there was nothing else than Vinyl, so did Laidback Luke. A-Trak is one the most talented scratch DJs ever and Deadmau5 does some pretty innovative things. Basically what I’m saying is: Just because it’s EDM, it’s not automatically bad. There are super talented DJs who just happen to like and play this kind of music, just like there are boring and untalented “underground” DJs en masse.

Okay, here is one of my favourite remixes ever. Technically it’s of The Disco Boys’ version of “Born To Be Alive”, but since they don’t use any of the vocals by “RB” (aka at least in Germany pretty famous entertainer Roberto Blanco), you can also see it as Remix of the Patrick Hernandez original. The only problem when you play it, is that you might get accused of filter overuse, but who cares?

Artist: The Disco Boys feat RB
Title: Born To Be Alive ((Felix Da Housecat’s Chicago Tracky Glitz Remix)
    Label: Fuel Records
    Year: 2001

A pretty similar track is this one. Celvin Rotane’s remix of the Magnum theme is pretty okay, yet slightly cheesy (I blame the uninspired rap vocals), but the Future Breeze Remix still holds up.

    Artist: Celvin Rotane
Title: Theme From Magnum (Future Breeze Remix)
    Label: Orbit Records
    Year: 1997

Let’s finish with some mid-90s UK Breakbeat awesomness. Got not much to say about this one, other that I instantly fell in love with it when I heard it the first time and that its piano part is oddly similar to the one in DJ Hooligan’s “Rave Nation”.

    Artist: Ratpack
    Title: Captain Of The Ship
    Label: Logic Records
    Year: 1995

One of the characters I had in mind for my movie, was a female DJ who has the right talent, but didn’t get any big bookings until she started to spin topless and in full body paint.

I like the period piece idea, btw. I give it 10 more years, before studios really make movies about this music genre in that time period.

An idea that I had a while ago, was a comedy with the “working”* title “Ibiza DJ Murder Mystery”. It was about some young semi-bedroom DJ (meaning that he already played a few minor warm up gigs, but not much beyond that), who wins a contest and is allowed to play a set on the main floor of one of the biggest clubs in Ibiza (At 9am, but he doesn’t care.) The night he arrives on the island, he stumbles across a dead body on the beach.

After staying at the police station until the next morning, he randomly runs into two of his idols in the hotel lounge. One is an old school House legend from Chicago, who can’t have a conversation without going about long rants about “the underground” and how awful the scene is these days (Think DJ Sneak crossed with Walter from “The Big Lebowski”) and the other one a (much nicer) European Techno hot shot, who walks the line between Beatport chart topping EDM festival headliner and respected name in the scene. And those three get dragged into an adventure about murder, organized crime, chart scams and the highs and lows of DJ life, all based on real world stories and personalities.

So basically, I would have a more satirical, but nonetheless true look at the scene, embedded in an entertaining story that has nothing to do with it at all.

*I never actually worked on it. 😀

I don’t have much to say about this one, other that I randomly remembered it on the bus earlier. It’s a good one, though.

    Artist: Nalin Inc.
    Title: Planet Violet
    Year: 1997
    Label: Kosmo Records

Let’s get much noisier with a track, that is named after a town that isn’t too far away from me and is probably the coolest thing ever that can be associated with it.

Artist: DJ Hooligan (These days you might know him better as “Da Hool”)
    Title: B.O.T.T.R.O.P.
    Year: 1992
    Label: No Respect Records

    —–

And now something trashy, although admittedly not meant to be taken seriously. A homage to the German word “geil”, which technically means “horny”, but is normally used like “cool” or “awesome”.

    Artist: Bruce & Bongo
    Title: Geil
    Year: 1986
    Label: Rush Records

I would call it more “passive aggressive with a bit of arrogant” than polite.

Okay, here we go. First something that totally blew my mind when I heard it on the radio. It might be overwhelming at first and sound like nothing but random noise, but it’s a brillantly piece of sampling, that takes what artists like Bomb Da Bass and Coldcut themself did in the 80s and elevates it to something that is still fresh after almost 20 years.

    Artist: Coldcut
    Title: More Beats & Pieces
    Year: 1997
    Label: Ninja Tune

Next up we got a song, that was one of the big hits of the 90s, both in the clubs and the mainstream charts. You could say that it only does what other artists did before in a more innovative way, but there is a reason why this song is still popular. (And it’s a nice companion piece to the Smart-e’s song above.)

    Artist: N-Trance
    Title: Set You Free
    Year:1994
    Label: All Around The World

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18W9WYw9HaA

And now something, that I can imagine would still rock today’s EDM festivals. (And I mean that as a compliment!) RMB was a Techno/Trance duo from Germany, that always went the extra mile for their sound and this b-side of one of their biggest hits (“Spring”) is a great, constantly evolving example, that must be listened to from the beginning to the end.

    Artist: RMB
    Title: Whispering
    Year: 1996
    Label: Low Spirit

I don’t know if there is a special story behind its origin, but back in school I asked a girl who was fluent in Spanish to tell me what it means. (Mostly because I had a HUGE crush on her. 😀 ) Basically it’s just a guy saying generic stuff like: “Hey, we are all here and everybody is having a good time!”
