DJ Big DParticipant
Being a former band guy, I like a floor monitor pointed up at my head. Impractical in most DJ booths, on my mobile gigs I use a 12inch 300w Behringer powered floor monitor, but any 8 or 10 inch powered PA speaker would work, I used a QSC K10 for awhile, then a 5 inch JBL powered studio Monitor. The lack of cone protection is a real concern on the JBL. If there isn’t much traffic in the DJ booth Probably no sweat, but the worst case scenario could get expensive. YMMV
DJ Big DParticipantUpdated Numark NV
DJ Big DParticipantIt’s got everything you need to get started, I started on a mixtrack 3. And it fits perfectly in a roadcase for a numark NV.
DJ Big DParticipantI started out from scratch with a mixtrack 3 (not Pro) with VirtualDJ, and it was a good starter controller, It did what was needed to learn the basics of beatmatching and mixing. I recently upgraded to the Numark NV, Mainly because I found a screaming good buy on it, and because I wanted more audio output options (ie Balanced XLR main outputs) than were possible with the Mixtrack 3. Had I not found such a good deal, I would still be happily mixing on the mixtrack 3. It has paid for itself many times over, gigs every Friday and Saturday Night since September. I still keep it around for a backup just in case. I found I still prefer VirtualDJ over Serato, but that is probably more just personal preference than anything related to the software, my workflow has grown up around VirtualDJ, no need to rock the boat now 😉
DJ Big DParticipantThe Numark NV has the light (which I like) at 0 no click, but it is 3 times the price of the MTP 3
DJ Big DParticipantHoly Powerstrip batman!
DJ Big DParticipantFor me it was about a month. Let me qualify that.
1. I had been in the music business for 10+ years, so I understood the business and what it takes to get gigs.
2. I also had a good list of contacts for possible gigs, club owners, bartenders, etc.
3. A little luck never hurts. I got hired for a resident DJ position off of my reputation as a musician…So I had a gig booked before I bought a stitch of gear. and
4. I had a deadline…When I got hired, the departing DJ was leaving in 4 weeks, so I had 4 weeks to sort out some software, a controller, find some music, and practice practice practice…(I can tell you I didn’t get much sleep for 4 weeks)This is not a typical case, but there are some nuggets you can gleen from this… I learned from being a musician, you learn the most when you perform live. There is nothing like having an expectant crowd looking to you to perform to speed up your learning curve. You have to be able to accept less than perfection in your live show, get the basics down…you will figure out the rest on the fly. Look at it this way, to DJ professionally means that you are going to play music, and you are going to get paid (hopefully), and waiting for perfection before your first gig generally means you will never have your first gig. Have fun with it, be willing to take some criticism, you won’t be perfect right away, but that’s ok. Remember you only do your first gig once, and it won’t kill you.

DJ Big DParticipantI’m a big fan of the QSC K Series, for your purposes I would look at the k8. I think they are around 20 lbs each. I have the k10s and a Ksub, love them. Plenty of power in a small speaker. YMMV
DarrenDJ Big DParticipantYes all legally acquired, mostly from 25+ years of being a music junkie and a pack rat, and more recently, through a paid DJ music service (content unlimited, franchise record pool). There is a bunch of it that I don’t use, and the more recent stuff has grown mostly from requests and research, I am a mobile DJ with wedding gig aspirations. I am in the process of sorting and organizing constantly, and I rarely have to purchase individual tracks, either I have it somewhere, or can get it in a few clicks of a mouse from one of the services that I pay for.
Thanks for the welcome and the music collection tips.
