I’ve played at a “new age traveller” camp not too far from where I live as well as on some massive Free Party Rigs.

DeathrayMemberI all serious, I just used the Keyboard and an Oxygen 8 Midi controller…. Simples. Worked all the time every time.
March 3, 2012 at 12:58 pm in reply to: Do you remember the first day you had a DJ controller? #16087DeathrayMemberMy first controller was a pretty hands on piece of equipment that integrated my brain into its matrix. You would have two high quality audio files stored on a outdated disc format and you’d have to lay them out on a rotating platter and lay a device onto the rotating audio file in order to read it. Oh, and you would have two of these rotating platters each with there own set of reading devices. You’d then have a separate box covered in knobs, faders, lights and switches that would “mix” the incoming audio signals sent from the other two devices just like the interface on a computer screen, but only it was in 3D and you use physical gestures like on a I pad (weird, I know). I order to integrate your brain into this matrix of alien technology, you attach a small set of speakers to your ears and they would reproduce the audio files stored on the disc’s as a sound. You then have to work out with audio file was or a higher tempo and which was slower and adjust the rotation speed of the platters accordingly using your hands and a small fader next to each of the rotating platters.
I still have this setup somewhere….

Just do what I did, get MAX MSP and build your own VJ patch and map it to your midi controller.

or, someone who has thousands of listeners across the globe thru an internet radio station but just because he/she doesnt have people in a ”room toe tapping” oh he is not a dj…
ok, that makes total sense. I love sound reasoning like that.
You do have a valid argument regarding radio DJ’s, I did not consider that at all and I am stumped regarding how to tackle that one. I do think that DJing/Presenting on the wireless is slightly more advanced with regards to presentation so perhaps you could instantly call your self a DJ just by having the Balls to do it.
I still believe that Bedroom DJ’s are Bedroom DJ’s and that you become a DJ when can play out to a approving audience. DJ’s are performers, performing to yourself is practicing…. and you practice so you can do the real thing out there in front of people. And by doing the real thing over you perfect your style and track selection and everything else too until everything just ‘clicks’ and you have that DJ moment where everybody’s moving and the room is pumped…….
THATS WHEN YOU BECOME A DJ!!(in my opinion)
DeathrayMemberHell!! I’m sure there are a lot more that need mentioning Iceman.
eg: If you’ve never warmed up a night to an empty room, you haven’t payed your dues.DeathrayMemberYou are a DJ as soon as you’ve played in front of a full room at a party or a club and everyone is dancing/toe tapping/nodding along…… everything else is just DJing/Mixing.
DeathrayMemberThe ability to dig for amazing tracks and not just play tracks from the beatport charts.

DeathrayMemberYes. I did it for years and I think it’s made me a quicker and more nimble DJ now that I have several controllers. Sometimes working in a restrictive environment makes you work a lot harder to get the results you want to achieve.
DeathrayMemberI have mine mapped to beatmasher and beatslicer.
