Boarding school. Ouch. So glad my folks kept me at home in the country. Even though the town was a hole!

Another good way to order would be ask your music teacher for the subject if you could put an order in with their stuff, as they get good educational discounts. Also pays to have the music teachers on side, thats how I could play at school so often 😉

Failing that, check out http://www.kosmic.com.au/ – these guys are my local plus they do online orders, and will happily beat any price you can throw at them 😀

Ouch. Okay, correction then, I buy everything gear-wise from my local music store. I think there may be some confusion about the term “music store” as I refer it to musical equipment and instruments, not actual music. The lesson here is if you can, network!

However, I do occasionally buy CDs from a physical store, as the staff there always have great insight on their music across a wide range of genres. See http://www.78records.com.au/

But in this day and age, I see the music store (equipment) as the record store of yesteryear, where the regulars and staff know each other, and network as a result. I’m just trying re-iterate the point of network, network, network! It’s gotten me places, so I’m just trying to spread the love! 😀

Same with me. The Hype Machine is my number 1 port of call for blogs, and if any blogs consistently post music I like, I’ll subscribe to them. Sometimes the blog will let you download the music, sometimes not. If not, then it’s off to Beatport.

    Hello William

Just wondering, does it have to be an online store? Have you ever thought about the possible networking opportunities
that could be gained by walking into a physical store?

For example, I buy EVERYTHING from my local music store, in person. Why? Even though they do online orders, I prefer to walk in an talk to the staff there. By doing this, I am made known to the staff as a return customer, and they do their best to look after me, even giving me discounts. (for example, almost everything I have bought from them is 20-30% cheaper than the storedj prices). Also by making myself known to the staff, they know I take my DJing seriously, and as a result, the staff (who are DJs themselves) have given me networking oppurtunities who have gone on to giving me gigs.

For this reason, I buy almost nothing online!

Nup, that kinda lead cant exist, because USB is digital (1’s & 0’s) and regular audio is analouge (signal peaks with sound levels).

So if you plugged USB into, say, a mic input, all you’ll hear is a hum, where as you could damage a usb port with analouge signals…

Single ended lead? I’m not sure what you mean there, but if you walk into your local music store and ask for a 1/8″ to RCA stereo lead they’ll know what you’re talking about.

(I mean one of these: http://www.amazon.com/3-5mm-Mini-Plug-Computer-Stereo/dp/B000FEHO0U)

Those Wirekeep LEDs look pretty cool, as does the Centre-stage. However I like to offset my stand, so the Centerstage isnt needed, and it looks as though the subtray can be added on later, as do the Wirekeep LEDs.

Although the custom engraving looks pretty cool, I dont think it’s all that visible from the crowd, but I can always get some done later if need be.

But I got a significant discount by buying what my store had in stock, so I’m not complaining. Might get the gf to get me some Wirekeep LEDs for my birthday though 😀

Tony – having your iPhone routing through your Mixtrack in the event of a computer failure is useless.

The way the Mixtrack Pro works is it sends audio from the mic input through the software, and back into the outputs. If your computer were to crash, this connection would be severed, rendering your Mixtrack a fancy paperweight. Put simply, the Mixtrack is useless with out a working laptop.

As far as using a DJ app on your phone, forget about it, you can’t DJ properly on an iPhone anyway. What I would recomend instead is record a 15-30 mins mixtape of you playing a set, and have that ready to go on your iPhone instead, as this leaves you to fix whatever the problem was in the first place, not attempt to mix on a 2″ touchscreen.

As far as leads go, you’ll need a 1/8″ (3.5mm) to RCA stereo lead to plug your iPhone (1/8″) to the house mixer (RCA).

$385! Ouch! Mine cost $180 AUD – which was an ex-demo with no extras. Just wondering, what extras were you concidering?

Peixinho – I can vouch for the quality of Traktor 2 Pro – it’s one hell of a piece of software! You’ll love it.

I can also highy recomend the Crane Stand – it’s the most flexible and durable stand on the market (and the most expensive, but you get what you pay for), and will last for years, if not decades! When shopping for my stand, I looked at all the other stands on the market, and all looked as though they’d break within a few months of use. Also some colapsible stands couldn’t even hold the weight of my (heavy) 17″ laptop. So I have not a single regret what so ever with my stand!

First CD gig – hectic. I had barely enough tunes to last the night, I hadnt learnt to beatmatch properly yet, so about half the mixes were just trainwrecked, and everybody kept asking me to play the worst music. Even thrusting forward ipods at one point. But I learnt a heap that night, one of which is never play for school!!!

First digital gig – hectic. I had a half-hour of power at the busiest day of semester down at the uni tavern, and hadnt done a proper gig for over a year (heck, I hadnt mixed for nearly a year!), and straight out had to mix from the prevoius DJ’s drum n’ bass into my electro – not the easiest feat. Apart from my Traktor library going somewhat haywire (and it hasn’t done it since, so go figure!), the gig went of pretty well, with some of the pros commenting on how well it went!

I hate to admit it, but perfectionism is what has prevented me from releasing my mixtapes so far. I should just bite the bullet and record a mix.

And now I think of it, I had a mix this afternoon and it was technically perfect….. am I OCD of something? :p

DJ Mixes (mixtapes) – no way. I have a backup cd which is 30mins of my own recording which acts as my backup/changeover/dunny break CD. But no way would I concider using someone elses mixtape.

Mash-ups – Occasionally. I try to do similiar stuff live by dropping accapellas over breaks, but occasionally I’ll use someone elses work, especially if it’s a blend of two songs the crowld will love.

Remixes – Definatly! In my eyes, a remix put in the public domain is the same as an origional from a producer (in fact remixing is almost like producing!) so I concider it fair game. Remixes are also central to the sets I play, as I use them to convice a crowd to get down on some glitchy electo house by the end of a night 😀
