    Almost. It’s a network switch. The shelf on my laptop stand was just a handy place to put it where I could see the LEDs.

    You need to beatgrid your tracks if you want to use tempo-synched effects though, don’t you?

    Ooooh! Hark at Miss Posh with her lah-di-dah 128K Amstrad. Some of us had to make do with a 64K one! :p

    Good luck. Just remember, if you have any problems, disconnect the drive and ask for advice before trying anything else as that way you have more of a chance of saving your data.

    Thank You for your Help;
    What happened last night was ‘Suddenly’ out of Nowhere; my CPU went up to 100%; and my External Drive had this Orange loading Bar at the top of the window that just went on Forever;
    When I pressed the ‘Start’ button to see what was going on I couldn’t even Access my ‘C’ Drive or even the ‘Control Panel’; and there was a Lot of Noise coming from the External Drive; I Restarted my laptop and it all went Quiet again; but as soon as I Selected my External Drive (I was able to Access ‘My Computer’ after the Restart); my CPU shot up to 100% again; and all I had Access to was my email and Internet (which was Fortunate); but of course it is my Music I am concerned about Mostly;
    The Drive still has one more Years Warranty; but of course they will just tell me to Reformat before I send it back;

    Hmmm… That does sound to me like the beginning of a disk failure. These things can tend to be intermittent at the start, which could explain why it suddenly started working again. BTW, I work in technical support so I can understand why they’d initially ask you to reformat the disk as it would help to rule out a simple corruption problem. Obviously if you get the problem again after reformatting then it helps them to justify a hardware fix or replacement.

    I Wish I had the Opportunity to Copy the Music to another External Drive; but I don’t have Access to one; my Music is only in fact 60GB or something and I have that Free on my ‘C’ Drive; and so I could do that at least – If the Drive allows me to Access it – as last night all I was trying to do was Copy a 100MB on my External Drive to a Different Folder on my External Drive :(;

    If you have enough space on your C drive then you should copy your music there. Don’t try to copy the whole lot in one go, though; do it a folder at a time. This way, if the copy fails part way through it’s easier to tell how far you’d got so that you know what you still need to copy. If you only get some of the music copied across and the drive starts playing up again, disconnect the drive and leave it turned off for a couple of hours and then try again. Sometimes allowing the drive to cool down can get it working again for a while, long enough to rescue your files. When my external drive failed it took me about 10 attempts to get my data back before the drive died completely, but I was able to get most of my data back.

    When you say that you couldn’t access the drive could you be more specific? Was it showing up in Windows Explorer and refusing to work or was it not showing up at all? Could you hear the disk spinning? The problem could be as simple as a re-format (after copying your data to another drive) or it could be that the disk is on its way out, in which case you’d need to copy your data to another drive ASAP. If it’s the first problem then it’s still possible that your data can be saved without re-formatting.

    I had a similar problem with an external drive a while back where the disk was dying and was able to save most of the data on it, but it was a bit of a faff.

    I will Definitely try the Different USB Port;
    And this afternoon I tried the External Drive on my Foster Mother’s laptop and it worked Fine; so it is ‘Possible’ that this ‘Helped’;
    I have doen a Scan on the Drive with Norton and StopZilla and nothing untoward was found;
    Unfortunately I can’t afford Food right now; so a Replacement External is out of my Range 🙁

    Going by this information it certainly sounds more like a problem with the USB port than the drive.

    The S4 certainly looks like a nice piece of kit, but rather excessive for my needs.

    Nothing fancy. Late-2007 MacBook, Maxtor external HD, Behringer BCD3000 and Sennheiser HD 215 headphones.

    Many say it is not the best one, and it is getting old now… But for that money(215 euros), brand new in a shop and it as a soundcard built in… plus Traktor Pro LE included…. (it works also on Traktor Pro Full, and no need for mapping)

    Im pretty happy with it…

    Got to agree there. For the money it’s a great piece of kit, especially as there wasn’t a huge amount of choice when it came out, unlike today. Mine’s still running nicely, although I’m hoping to replace it once I start working again. I’m currently thinking about getting a VCI-100MKII or saving the extra to get a VCI-300.
