At least you were wise enough to play the hip-hop that you did have! The only thing I can think of is just expanding your hip-hop library a bit just in case. Also, if you have any friends that are really into that genre, ask them maybe once a month if there are any big songs out. I personally don’t follow that genre but my friends really like it so when we go out to a club, it helps to know what the crowd is listening to. But yea, not a bad gig at all considering the circumstances.

Yea, I figured Audacity was my only option. Reason is I’m trying to record 2 tracks together and just make it one longer track but that “noise” at the end of the first one is driving me crazy. I keep trying to just mix it manually but struggling and I’m psychocrazy and want to have it PERFECT.

If you haven’t switched to Traktor yet, DO IT. I tried out the major 3 software and Traktor was my favorite hands down. Download the demo of both Serato and Traktor and test them out. If you end up considering traktor, I think they still have a special where if you buy the X1, you get the full version of Traktor for FREE. That’s an unbeatable deal right there. The X1 will allow you to expand your DJ setup significantly (this little baby is a beast!) and you get the full version of a great software…all for $200.

Do it, Do it, Do it.

Forget the “more professional look”. In the end, it’s about a good sound. With this set-up, you will be extremely happy.

*This is just my personal opinion.

I’m actually doing a rock collab with fluxdeep right now. It’s always good every now and then to have a different set of ears listen in and give their opinion. All of it is being done over the internet. Sure, it’s not the same as mixing on the fly but you still learn and grow as a DJ.

I know i’m a bit late here but for future reference: PULL A STEVE ANGELLO (mixtape and pretend to dj)!! lolol, jk jk. but in all honesty I would make a warm-up mix tape while you go and “warm-up”. let’s be honest, most of the fun dj stuff doesn’t happen until later in the night. you can preplan how you want to reach peak time and when you get back, sexy time for the ears of the crowd.

IF (major IF) your going to have some/all prepared material, make the most of it at least. Crowd Surf, Go Crazy, Spray Champagne on the Crowd. If it’s not the typical club environment, free game. Don’t just sit behind the decks and pretend.

Crysix: I agree, when I started to sit down and choose songs, I realized how hard this was going to be!!

Emma: Would love to hear the mix if/when you complete it!

    Drew: Agree

Hessler: I play drums as well and see what you mean when you say it has it’s advantage. On the other hand, I don’t consider autosync cheating……just supermegafantastic help :p

    Flux:
    1) From what I saw, these people literally jammed to things from Linkin Park to Guns and Roses to A Perfect Circlet to Spanish Rock so now it’s more of a personal choice. I wanted to finish off with the spanish rock stuff (ex: mana) but I won’t have enough material to do an actual set of only this music so I’m still contemplating how I’m going to approach this.
    2) In terms of the mixing: absolutely true. Rock is made to listen from start to finish, unlike EDM where it’s made to mix. However, I feel like maybe some songs I could get away with in terms of starting/stopping from somewhere that originally intended but not something I would abuse. ALOT of preplanning in this case. I’m going to try The Killers > The Hives and see how that works out.
    3) I’m going to try to avoid EDM as much as possible but when you said Bloody Beetroots, I can see Warp as a great transition from a crunching guitar song.

Again, the reason I’m doing this is because my fav genre of music has always been and always will be rock and because I want to do this guy the favor of a good mix for his bar. This place is already booming but has so much potential to grow and I think the music is a great start.

Homework for today is to find songs that work around the 2 songs below. This isn’t live mixing so I have a lot of flexibility in terms of trial and error. If anyone want’s to help me out with this shoot me an inbox message!

I like it but it seems like if your gonna go this route at this price, I would save up a little more and get the S4.

I like his production stuff more than his actual DJ sets. That being said, yea he is considered the “mainstream” DJ but just like anything else that goes mainstream, if it catches your attention and has you jumping to a beat then he’s doing something right….and there are a lot of people jumping!

Good news: Turns out getting my Macbook fixed will be considerably cheaper than I thought it was going to cost. I’ll be getting it back when I return from the Dominican Republic. That’s means I’ll be able to install Ableton again on it! I’ll be using it as a production tool more than a DJing tool but will try to keep an open mind when it comes to the software.
