Steve (k-rex) RichmanParticipant
I have made the same request with no response. “Music, mixes and shows would be the place where you can do just that!” is not the place where you can do just that! – not talking mixes but original music, as well as DAWs, production techniques, studio setup, studio effects, etc.

Steve (k-rex) RichmanParticipantYour understanding is pretty much correct. Most audio interfaces provide you with 2 or more rca inputs and outputs, and connect to your computer via usb. The outs go to your monitors, and the ins feed into your computer’s daw (or other software). Phil made a video discussing this for the free dj course, here’s a link:
http://www.digitaldjtips.com/learn-to-dj-video-11-audio-interfaces-sound-cards/And here’s an example setup using a Native Instruments Komplete Audio 6:
Note that the Audio 6 has mic preamps – most lower end interfaces will not (and you may not need them, and I’m not recommending the Audio 6, just an example).Steve (k-rex) RichmanParticipantWhole books have been written to answer your questions 🙂 Assuming you;re new to producing, here’s a 10,000 foot overview. The core of a home production system is a DAW (digital audio workstation), which is software that runs on a PC/Mac and provides what you need to record, mix, sample, etc – Ableton Live, Cubase, Pro Tools are examples of DAW software. Inside of your DAW is typically where you would run synths, effects, and other audio tools. These are usually called plugins, and typically come in VST (effects) and VSTi (instruments) formats. These can be controlled with MIDI keyboards (or any midi controller). You will probably want to add an audio interface, mic, and monitor speakers – here’s an article on lifehacker that covers some of the basics.
http://lifehacker.com/the-basics-of-music-production-lesson-1-set-up-your-h-499088482As far as hardware requirements, no one answer – anything decent (PC or Mac) will suffice, but when you’re running lots of effect and instrument plugins, fast CPU counts.
TLDR – to get started, download an eval of Reaper, a good inexpensive DAW. Then, try out some free VST and VSTi plugins – here’s a good site to start with. This is some fairly complex stuff, expect to spend a lot of time reading and experimenting.
Steve (k-rex) RichmanParticipantLike C says, more detail would be useful. But at around £120, the Stanton M203 is a good little box that should meet your needs.
Steve (k-rex) RichmanParticipantGreetz, welcome to the ‘hood 🙂

Steve (k-rex) RichmanParticipantVery entertaining read, Chuck – thanks for sharing it here!
Steve (k-rex) RichmanParticipantAnother suggestion – become familiar with Activity Monitor, and fir it up to troubleshoot when ou’re having the problem.

Steve (k-rex) RichmanParticipantSeem to remember reading this really positive review of the DDJ-WeGo…. hmm, now where did I see that…… oh yeah, right on this site!
Pioneer DDJ-WeGo review by Digital DJ TipsSounds like a good beginning/learning controller to me 😀
Agree with the posts that it’s not pro, won’t take you too far – but after six months or a year, if u are still into it, just give it away to a student and move up. (and it’s certainly enough to learn with)
Steve (k-rex) RichmanParticipantDevelopers of Audiobus are also reporting serious issues – see this post
Steve (k-rex) RichmanParticipantNo question portable IOS stuff is getting very good and gaining much ground, but no way is it a replacement for OS X and more powerful hardware – at least for a few more years. Also, many issues with the new IOS release, not advised to upgrade yet (have a post on this which i will update). But can you do a good set with just an iPad? Absolutely.
Steve (k-rex) RichmanParticipantWelcome to the forums – electronic music has had a strong core group of followers ever since the moog, and that won’t change. This current wave of EDM popularity is encouraging to me, though, and i don’t really have complaints.
Steve (k-rex) RichmanParticipantWelcome back – i find love of music really never goes away….
