Any particular reason you are recording with GarageBand instead of Serato?

true. I read that a little quickly and just saw the song a/b/c and not portion of the track

256k .AAC and 320k .mp3 are mainly what I use.

[part of song A][drop transition from song c] [part of song B] ~seems like this would just be a mix to me?

See if you can network and take the ‘friend of a friend’ approach and have someone else submit it on your behalf.

Just Google Top 25 songs of 1980, 1981, 198x, etc to give you a starting point for music to supplement your collection if you are missing anything.

80’s Freestyle music usually goes over well too.

Keep in mind that when purchasing a Serato controller/software you are paying for a lifetime of free updates at that point as well. Compare this to Traktor where you are purchasing software with each new major release.

If the PUSH is out of your price range look into getting either a Novation Launchpad-S or the Akai APC-20 or
    Akai APC-40

The APC-40 will give you control over all the fader/knob controls but the launchpad gives you a more playable pad section. It all depends on how you are going to use Ableton.

I have the QSC K-12s and my friend has the K-10s with the KW181 sub. I think the K-10s are already going to be overkill for a room that is 18×20…

As you have read, the sound quality is crystal clear and amazing and the DSP that is built in along with the back panel on the cabinet makes them very versatile.

I only used Virtual DJ briefly before switching to Serato, but I had the same issue. I don’t remember off the top of my head, but it is an easy fix somewhere in the settings. I think it had something to do with the sampling frequency or something like that.

If you are just starting out and not dead-set on Virtual DJ, you can go download a free copy of the Serato DJ intro software from their site and give that a go….

What are the specs of your laptop. I’m almost 100% sure that is the source of your problems, unless you received a faulty Mixtrack Pro.

Did you buy the Mixtrack Pro new or used?

You can currently map this to a secondary controller. Serato is working to have mapping functionality to the primary controller in a future update.
