Vlad needs to show the club owner a playlist, but what advice would you have for playing a DJ set to impress?

Reader Vlad Serbanescu has got in touch wanting advice. Rather than give him one answer, we thought we’d ask you, our readers, to offer your words of encouragement and advice to Vlad. Here’s his question:

“Hello! First of all, I would like to congratulate you for the amazing site. I really am glad to be a member. Second, I would really appreciate it if you could help me with some tips. I have been a DJ for 7 years, I have played in many clubs, but I still get butterflies in the stomach when it comes to opening nights, big parties and lots of people. The thing is, I have an interview at a very nice club that will open soon. I really want the job. I talked to the owner and along with a bunch of other DJs, I am attending an audition. we need to take a playlist each in order to show him what kind of music we would like to play as part of an interview. We’ll play a one-hour set each as well.”

“His words were: ‘The best DJ gets the residency here!’

“Please give me some tips as how to impress, to STAND OUT from the crowd. I am a digital DJ, so a playlist will be easy to show on my laptop, but what should I focus on to stand out in my performance? I would appreciate if you find the time to help me and I promise I will also respond with the feedback after the event.”

So apart from the usuals – be smart, pleasant, turn up on time, be polite to the other DJs – what do you think? How should Vlad play it to stand out from an unknown number of other DJs? Please add our ideas in the comments below.
