I’d say it’s just a bad sound file. Not much you can do if that’s the case I’m afraid.

I’ll offer another viewpoint now that BoomDraw has favored Serato, which is his right of course.
I like Traktor over VDJ and Serato simply because it allows for the most things that I look for. Almost every setting of the software and the mapping can be altered. You can even change what information is shown on the bar above your track. And if you have a controller that wasn’t designed for Traktor, you can completely map it the way you want. If you can’t map yourself, there are plenty of people who have done it already for you. There is a way to use Traktor with Ableton and Maschine, and it’s pretty easy to set up as well using the midi clock. Many top notch dj’s use Traktor with Ableton or Maschine (Dubfire and Bass Kleph for instance). The only things Traktor doesn’t have that Serato does is a slicer, less responsive jogs (a must if you want to scratch using DVS for instance) and a flexible beatgrid.

Virtual DJ has very good mapping capabilities as well, but the quantization and user interface are lacking. It looks too chaotic to me. I also don’t have a lot of experience with it, but the package is very, very capable. Don’t let anybody tell you that it is for noobs only. It’s not.

Some stuff deleted for bad language…

You can’t just answer this question by asking people. Perception is not the same as fact. Perception is a really bad thing in general to base conclusions on in the first place. If you want to know wether creativity and performance are lower these days you should set standards for performance and creativity and judge past and present dj’s on the standards.

I use the X1 for fx 1 and 2 which are single effects (delay t3 and tape delay), so at the moment I cannot set a filter in there. I might switch them to 3 and 4 which should give the option to get a filter in on the x1. But there’s no need to use an effect then, I can just map a knob to the filter, no big deal.
I will not ditch old school mixing, simply because I need the experience for when there are only cdj’s available. Besides, I like manual beatmatching and I would miss it dearly. You limit yourself incredibly by simply ditching these techniques. Using cds’s would also be possible on four (or more!) decks with manual beatmatching, even when playing 2 minutes of each track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Zdj7Cutoc8
And Santa Creek, does your TM8 fit in a backpack? I haven’t found any that will fit it. If it won’t fit in a backpack I cannot use it.
Does nobody else have experience with upgrading hardware?

I know about the TM8, which is also considered. It is a bit big though. Software is not a problem, I can make my own mapping from scratch if needed and I already own Traktor Pro 2. I didn’t ask which controller I should buy (I can do that myself just fine), I asked wether it would be a waste of money to buy one in the first place. I understand your point as well koniobomama, but that would mean ditching the ‘old school’ beatmatching and simply using the right bpm and pressing play at the right time. And I do really miss having proper analog filters, I wonder why so many controllers don’t have them these days.

If you go to your controller mappings, you’ll also find a mapping for the keyboard. Find the up and down keys and delete the search step function assigned to them.

I’d go for Cross, because I don’t think there’s any development in Deckadance anymore. Cross had a new major release just a few months ago. It also has some nice features that even the big guys have not incorporated yet.

Here’s a video where you can see what I’m talking about. Ellaskins has a waveform, but nevertheless counts the bars so the mixing point is lined up perfectly.

The funny thing is, when you let them listen to the tracks they became famous with in the nineties, they will instantly recognise them.

No it doesn’t. A singer that writes his/her own songs, plays his/her own songs and has a really good voice beats the crap out of any popstar that has to sing with autocue and playbacks in a live performance to songs that somebody else wrote any day of the year in any genre.

Music is a matter of taste, but only if there is any. I am perfectly fine with people being fans of Bruce Springsteen. He’s a good singer, writes awesome lyrics and is a real performer. But I don’t like most of his songs. This is a difference in taste. Not liking Justin Bieber for instance has a totally different reason.

Count the bars from the first beat to the point you want to drop it in and from the other track the bars from the end back through the outro. Ellaskins has lots of info on these things on his youtube channel.

If there’s one thing I learned when it comes to music it is that people don’t like good music. They only like crap. They are unable to appreciate good productions of proper artist. Just look at what’s currently in the charts.

I have given up on changing the world around me a loooong time ago.

The Gemini and the Hercules both seem a bit small to me, with buttons very close to each other. The Hercules also seems too expensive for what you get in functionality to me. At that price point I’d rather go for a mixtrack pro 2 or a reloop mixage mk2.

Something that DJ Vintage missed but is worth mentioning is that it depends on the software wether your controller is supported, not the other way around. Cross DJ, Traktor and VirtualDJ allow you to map your controller (or download a mapping from the net), whereas Serato has no mapping options for supported controllers. You can map one, but only one that’s not outright supported and only with a supported controller connected.
