Please also be aware that you can’t learn to dj just by reading a book or watching a movie. You have to actually do it as well!

I’m going to try this with my DDJ-SR and my Mixtrack Pro 2, I’ll report back for the results.

You can make a distinction between several kinds of EDM. On one hand it is pretty popular these days, which is a good thing. But on the other hand it also means you get a load of horse menuer with it. You know, the beatport top 100. That’s the first category. Of course you could dismiss the entire scene for this reason, but that would make you miss out on the second category. A category that’s filled with great compositions made by great artists.

But this goes for almost any genre and is certainly not a sign of the times. There was some bad stuff in the eighties for example too as you will surely know.

So I would say the music is good, you just need to know where to look.

I will, but I’ve played there a couple of times already, just on my Mixtrack and on fridays. So next sathurday will be a double first.
I wonder how it will sound live.

Why is it old fasioned when a laptop is literally a couple of dozen times more powerful than a tablet? Plus you have multiple usb ports, good luck fitting something like an F1 next to your controller for samples on a tablet.
I don’t see any reason to use a tablet if you’re already using a laptop.

Cross supports every midi device ever made, just like Traktor and Virtual DJ. If they don’t have a mapping for it out of the box it doesn’t mean you can’t use it.
I currently have a Mixtrack Pro II and it’s ok, but I indeed miss the gain and filter knobs. If I were to start now I’d wait for the new Reloop Beatmix 4. It may seem expensive, but so is upgrading your limited software that came with the controller. Do the math, it’s very good value for money. Plus Reloop has an excellent reputation when it comes to build quality.

You don’t have to play country until they leave, you can try to find something that they don’t like, but the rest does. What about Vocal Trance? Make it a bit more feminine. Like Andy Moor’s Faces, Headstrong’s The Truth (David West Progressive), Jon ‘O Callaghan’s classical Big Sky, stuff like that. Or Prog House like Daddy’s Groove’s Stellar, almost any track by Calvin Harris or Joe T Vanelli’s Get it On (Summerlove).
I’m not really familiar with anything top 40 (although I do like Chris Cab’s Liar Liar), so I can’t help you with that.

I don’t care about the asymmetric layout either, I have no preference. Currently I use symmetric, but it’s not like that’s the only thing I can play with. I play in d’Oude Stoep in Vlaardingen. It’s not a full on EDM gig, more like a mobile dj gig. It’s even harder than a EDM gig at times, because you can’t see how people are enjoying the music as easy as a venue with a dancefloor.
I guess the pitch faders have more room on the SR, I heard some complaints that they were too close to other controls on the SX, but they are longer as well.

You’re right, most new products are mk2 stuff or other colours. I think I’ll go for the SR, but I’ll sleep over it a night. I have a gig coming up next sathurday, so I might be able to use it already there. If it fits in my current backpack that is. Or use an overnight bag.
What did you think of the pitch fader position? Was it annoying?

    Thanks for your response, Vintage.
I’ve narrowed it down to 3 options:
    – Pioneer DDJ-SR
    – Vestax VCI-400
    – Stay with my current gear.

The TM8 is too big, period. The DDJ-SR is great because it features velocity sensitive pads and enough outputs. It has four deck controls but no dedicated faders and stuff. I don’t think that’s a problem though as most of the time deck D is a remix deck and I have no problem at the moment with pressing a button to switch deck controls. The VCI-400 has dedicated deck controls, but not really enough outputs to make it a long term investment. Also, the pads are a little small.

So I’m leaning towards the DDJ-SR if I upgrade in the first place. The main problem now is to decide wether to upgrade or wait for different gear to come out, although that could be a while. The good news is I have until the end of april to decide, that’s when the cashback offer from Pioneer ends.

Is there any particular style of music they like? If so, play the exact opposite. Works every time. Especially when they’re drunk 🙂

If you just want to map effects, what’s wrong with getting something like a Kontrol X1? Much cheaper then what you’re looking at right now.

You can totally use four decks with a two deck controller if the software allows for altered mappings. I changed my Mixtrack Pro II mapping to support four decks in Traktor.
